Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

temps are dropping and dropping fast. it was really nice out today (and for the first time in almost a week, I feel good!) I didn't get the whole day off, I still had to do my route, but I was home early enough... a couple of late arriving express pieces kept me out for about an extra hour. I moved Gossamer and her eggs. it's a risky move, but she's so determined that I knew she would follow those eggs. she's in my workroom that is completely cleaned out, and easy to clean... it's already 30 below. going to 40 below and staying that cold through the weekend. day 21 is Monday. I expect it will take a bit longer, but knowing she sat 30 days last time, I'm not worried about her following through.

she's got all kinds of goodies and water just outside her kennel, but I still hand fed her once she settled in (which took like... 1 minute)

she let me decorate her in true broody fashion. she's such a sweetheart.

in other big news... I moved the 3 largest of the young cockerels into the ... (here is where my computer shut down on me last night... grrr!)

center section with the other bachelors. a few squabbles... but minor. I have to get outside to make sure they all survived the night...
It is always a good feeling when moving the chickens goes well!

I hope the broody hatches some nice chicks for you.

Oh my. The mobile site censored that so it's had to say what I did with a sick with a brick in it. My my my... One's imagination dies tend to kick in. Mortie and her socks... Tisk tisk

BTW.... it is sunny and warm hwre. Very odd.

Same here. Record high temps. Feels like spring, which sounds good, but it should be raining.

Cheeka, 40 below is something I've never experienced. I know it gets cold for you and mortie, but this is pretty extreme, isn't it? How do you get the dogs to go out to go? Mine are wimpy and have to be persuaded to go out in the rain. Can't imagine that kind of cold. Hope you all can stay toasty warm. Do you do frostbite prevention on the combs?

The coldest I have ever been was getting gas near the continental divide in Wyoming on HWY 70. It was cold and windy. I jumped back into the car and shivered for quite some time.

It is warm here in Woodland. Students were sun bathing on the grass. Weird!

We do not have rain in the forecast until March 7th! That is horrible for us and our drought.

The nest boxes are 18" off the floor. The poop board is just under the roost which is about 4 feet off the floor. A couple of them use the nest boxes but possibly two of them don't. I snatched the problem child up the other morning and stuck her in the nest box. She laid in the box but I think it was because she couldn't wait any longer. Today I find another egg on the poop board. Can't watch them close enough to pinpoint who all is guilty but I know one of them that is. Its pure meaness.

This is a funny post! :) Just to let you know, mine did the same thing when they finally started laying at around 6-7 months....never outside the coop just everywhere in the coop, only one Endora laid in the nest consistently I would find them on the poop board, around the common area, but only Endora's would be in the nest box. They never laid away from the coop, except the last one to lay she couldn't get in the coop I had shut the outside area and forgot, so I heard her "singing" and went out the see what was wrong and she was in the tall grass right next to where the coop is getting ready to lay! LOL...I picked her up, put her in the coop and into the nest box and she laid her egg! I've seen them run into the coop lay their egg, then run back outside to free range on the bugs ;) They've been really good girls for the most part....first chickens I've ever owned....there are 4 of them, Endora, Samantha, Gladys & Aunt Clara.....(yeah I was a fan of Bewitched...hehe) They are funny as hell.....chase my stray cats, eat their dry cat food...eat paint peeling off of metal plant stands, pellets that fall out of our wood pellet bags....tried to eat my christmas lights....jump up and look in the window to see where I'm at and see if they can beg some scraps...come running when they hear the back door open...and YES they do eat chicken....LOL...stole the chicken leg bones from the cats and ran with them.....

Debby, your chickens sound very comical and love their names...used to watch Bewitched too. I bet that is a funny sight to have them looking in the window at you.
