Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Lots of drama there! Sheesh!

I checked the chickens, and there were five on the roost. Worry for Bonnie made me enter. I found one egg on the ground, and every single other egg in the one nest box. It's a small (maybe 20 gallons) tote with half the lid cut out. It was a brooder a few years ago. I put it in for the turkeys to get out of the sun or nest. Now it is where I want the chickens to lay. I can't believe that they all used it the whole week, and in one pile! They were still laying under the box I built for sleeping in when I left!

I just came in, and haven't counted the eggs yet. With temperatures in the 90s, would you eat them (especially because they are fertile)?

I would float test them and then crack them into a bowl before using them.

It is possible for eggs to develop, but the temps need to be in the 90's all the time, not for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

I bet they are fine!

Sneaky girl! I was wondering if maybe she was hiding a nest of her own.

Glad your trip went well and all the chickens survived. Shopping for Jazlyn must be fun. I see all those cute little girl clothes and wish I had someone to buy them for.

Hi All! It has been such a long time since I was on this thread. I have to say I am delighted to see so many familiar names! I have lots of catching up to do, which I will love doing, but I look forward to becoming more active in this thread again!

All my critters are doing well with this lovely Florida summer heat and rain. Chickens are molting. I think I have 50 now (so much for my mini flock of 5). I have some new, soon to be layers. I actually think they may have started. I am finding a couple of pretty small eggs in the boxes. I have only been getting less than a dozen daily. I am at a loss as to where they may be laying them. It already is an Easter Egg Hunt on a daily basis. With 5.5 acres to search, I bet there are some pretty happy raccoons out there with pretty shiny coats. I also have 6 Indian Runner Ducks. What a hoot they are! The new ones should be laying soon too. They lay a pretty pink to green egg. Good size too! I am still in search of some Black Copper Marans so I can have those beautiful "chocolate" eggs like Cheeka's!

Good nite all!

Just noticed the bottom of my post listing my critters. I guess I will have to update that! Horses and cats stayed the same, up to 5 dogs now, 4 goats, and 50 chickens! I have lots of my own home grown added to the list, but I purchased some buff and white orpingtons, some speckled sussexes, a surprise that they sent me (which of course turned out to be a rooster, but he is some sort of bantam with a cream colored neck, black for the rest of the feathers, and a really long tail), and a black something that I will have to look up.

Good to see you! Runner ducks are supposed to be one of the best layers of the ducks. I saw some at a show and thought they were great. Do they swim like regular ducks? Seems like they'd have trouble keeping their heads up!

Post a pic of your mystery rooster and maybe we can help.

Hey Sully! welcome back and glad to hear that all is well and expanding!

we finally got a good rain, didn't last long, but I was in the process of moving the bantams from the broody pen to the back pen when the skies opened.

I went back about 45 minutes later to check on everyone, all was great til I returned to the broody pen. I moved injured Julius in... he's doing much better and with only Gossy in there, on her eggs, there's not threat for further injury. anyway, he was great and settled, and something was definitely wrong in Gossy's kennel. she was soaking wet! there was a good inch of water! all her eggs were soaked, very warm, but soaked.
I dried them, dried the nest, new bedding, zipped in with Gossy and gave her a quick blow dry. trouble is, when returned, she refused to sit on her still warm eggs. another 45 minutes later and she was settled in the back of the kennel, not on her now cold eggs. I'm so bummed.

trying to get a hold of my friend from Stillwater who has at least 4 chicks hatched that she wanted to place at least some of... she may have more hatched by now, but I haven't heard back from her. I need those chicks...

first Big Broody Mama, now Gossy. bad end to the year.

Sorry, Cheeka. Lol! My phone finally recognized your name!
Bonnie Tyler is thinking of brooding. She spends too much time in there for her to be laying.
Sturgis tripped over my Harley boot last week. He was doing better day by day. Now he's at a standstill. I think it's the jumping off the bed and couch. I don't see a point in X-rays. He hurt his legs so many times in the beginning, I know what is hurting (knee, hip or ankle) by his behavior. This is his ankle, and the pain is minimal. I can move it and push on it. He walks on it some.
Anyway! So I might get a broody soon. Hmm... To hatch or not to hatch. I wonder what you guys think. :)
