Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I've had two birds wait until 8 months before gifting me with their first eggs. and both of them laid 8-9 eggs then quit to brood. babies themselves... and both were successful with hatching, so it only set the trend that the eggs they laid deserved a name and they both try (in Peach's case, tried) to brood all year long.
now I have the next generation... laying a little sooner, but still at around the 6 month mark and they have the broody bug bad. they want babies all winter long and it's just too darned cold here. for their sake as well as my own... I should move to a warmer climate, like where Mylee is...

The broody bug goes around here a lot, as well. I had some start laying at the end of august and go broody 5 weeks later. This summer I had to break broodies about 10 times. They've all gone broody this summer except Wilson and Penny. Maggie and Midge loooove to go broody. I am hoping they will not do it this winter because it's harder to break them for me then.

I have 5 broody Seramas right now. In October!?

They are so cranky.

Cheeka, is your house still on the market? Things are picking up here in CA. Lot more homes on the market now. It's been pretty slow, but prices are still going up.

I have 2 RIR at 26 weeks. I have 3 Delawares at 22 weeks. No eggs yet from anybody. The reds have very red combs and wattles, but they've shown no interest in the laying boxes. Delawares aren't so red, but ditto with ignoring the boxes.

I think it's a chicken conspiracy. Get gullible humans to care for and feed them and never have to pay any rent or do anything besides squawk.

Yes, a conspiracy is right. Get an old KFC bucket and hang it in the coop. Show them who's really in charge!

Sounds like your RIRs will be soon. I've heard that Dels can take awhile, more of a meat bird heritage, so they take longer to grow.

Try putting some fake eggs or golf balls in the nests. Maybe they will take the hint!

might take them longer to start because the days are getting shorter...depends on where you live. Where I live, it's getting to be that time. I have found that chickens that come into laying age in summer lay sooner than ones that come of age in fall. This means you're probably in australia and it's spring for you lol.

and waiting it out! btw, it is a conspiracy... Pie helps, but it's no guarantee...

so.... I've finished my first calendar, scenery from over this year in upstate NY. chicken calendar is an absolute next project, but boy oh boy is it hard to choose! they have to be large files, so sometimes a gorgeous pic isn't big enough and I would have to change format - have more than one (up to 4) on one page... which isn't bad, but I love the full size. I tried the photo of Dutch that had been chosen in the top 30 and it works beautifully, so I just didn't make it this year, but he'll be January in mine!
