Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I’d buy some eggs. I have only one hen laying right now and today her egg froze and cracked.

I have eight chicks in the playpen next to me (a duck in the kitchen that’s beside the point), and quail hatching in five days. I have one hen outside, and three duck hens that aren’t laying. Quail lay in 6-8 weeks. I’ll take itty bitty eggs in two months, rather than wait six months for the chickens.

I had an EE do that years ago. She didn’t start again until after the next molt.

Gott love it when they do that!

I had a group of 4 hens just plain stop laying for 6 months. I was about to turn them into soup when they started back up and laid like crazy until November.

During the 6 months that they did not lay, I wormed them, treated for lice and mites (just in case...I did not see any bugs or worms) Gave them vitamins and big ol bird. I tried chili flakes and was thinking about getting a priest to remove a curse....Then they just started laying again!
