Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

there were 2 eggs in the nest this morning, one brown, one green... most likely laid Sunday evening, and there was a cream egg waiting for me when I got home from work.
I sent my BH home with a half dozen for his folks, 2 of each color. He called to say that they thought the shell colors were wonderful, and they ate them already!

( I think they ate them already bc they were afraid that chicks would develop in their fridge

Lol :D too funny

You are funny.
Last week I put a dozen eggs in my DH's uncle's fridge. I saw a few dozen eggs already in there, and felt like "they won't even appreciate it. I am wasting my eggs.

" But they buy eggs in flats that are unmarked (thus I can use to sell eggs to anyone), and were SUPPOSED to be saving them for me.
Yesterday morning his aunt calls, and says she threw all the cartons away. She didn't know I still had chickens (

).
Then we see his uncle at work. He RAVED about the eggs! AND! He wants to buy more. He asked what he owed me for the first dozen. DH said, "nothing". Uncle says, "Oh, I see! Get us hooked on fresh eggs first, then we HAVE to have more!"
Now I am happy.
I am getting 4 eggs on average. The thin shell isn't happening unless I get more. Six layers, 4 eggs. Good ratio!
Ready Meat Loaf?

Now I'm going to be humming that song all day, with a smile on my face, because the name Meat Loaf always makes me laugh.

My hubby took some to work, and now everyone wants eggs. They really like the color variety. Wish my Welsummer would lay. She's about 30 weeks now, and hasn't shown the slighted interest in the nest boxes.

Regular and thorough searches of the chicken yard have turned up nada.

Has anyone ever heard of a healthy pullet/hen that never lays?

Well, we named her Grace because she almost died. She was in the culled brooder at the feed store, not expected to survive, but the very last of the Welsummers, and I really wanted one, so I "saved" her.

Turns out she had an umbilical hernia and probably hadn't absorbed all the yolk sack either. On top of that, she's very skittish and has very large spur buds.

Don't have any adult pics of her because she thinks the camera is some kind of scary monster that must be avoided at all costs.

I'm open to names! Slacker, Dud, Soup? What do you think? I really want the darker Wellie egg!

What kind of chicks are you getting? We'll be waiting for pics.

Okay she was a special chick, I can't blame her for taking her time. I am getting 13 chicks all different, the only duplicate breed was two Easter eggers.
I picked out eight birds myself and let them give me a mystery five pack, which can contain any of the following:

Buckeye
Ancona
Easter Egger
Black Sumatra
Andalusian (Blue, Black, or Splash)
Appenzeller Spitzhauben
Sicilian Buttercup
Salmon Faverolles
Golden Campine
Buff Chantecler
Blue Laced Red Wyandotte
Barnevelder
Brahma (Buff Brahma, Light Brahma)
Marans (Silver Cuckoo, Golden Cuckoo, Black Copper, Blue Splash, White)
Dominique
Columbian Wyandotte
Dark Cornish
Cochin (White, Partridge)
Welsummer
White Sultan
Polish (Assorted colors)
Exchequer Leghorn
Speckled Sussex
Hamburg (Assorted colors)
Lakenvelder (Silver, Golden)
Partridge Penedesenca
Dominiques

------------
My original order:
1 Ancona
1 Australorp
2 Easter egger
1 jersey giant
1 golden laced Wyandotte
1 barred Plymouth rock
1 rhode island red

Well given the history you really don't know what other problems occurred along with the umbilical hernia., and given the male development of spurs, I'd say she may be missing ovaries and estrogen...so yeah, don't expect a layer, just a pet. Maybe a good mascot for your flock. Not all are perfect.

Yeah, that's what I've been afraid of. Maybe someday she'll surprise us but will have a good home no matter what.

Good excuse to get some new chicks next spring!

How exciting! Will they let you know what breeds are in your mystery pack, or do you have to play the guessing game?

That's how I started, 10 chicks of all different breeds except 2 EEs. One EE was a roo, and he is now living happily with a flock of his own.
I've got a Gold Sex Link, New Hampshire, White Leghorn (who was supposed to be a Delaware- brooder mix up), EE, Barred Rock, Buff Orp, Black Australorp, SL Wyandotte, and Welsummer

. That's the order of who lays best. I like the variety and the personalities. Don't want to breed right now, but some day....
