Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Four eggs today, one of each color! 2 from first thing this morning, 2 this afternoon... it snowed, only a little up in Gilboa, a lot heavier in Jefferson, and hardly any in Middleburgh, but there was a little... the gang didn't like it one bit. they went out and came straight back in. the lady at the convenience store gave me a leftover breakfast sandwich that they couldn't sell, to give to the birds. it was so funny to watch them tear it apart and chase each other around for the slices of bacon, ham and sausage, the bread and the scrambled egg were eaten last.

Si is in BIG Trouble. BIG. HUGE. he went after the Pug, pinched her on her face - her ear or her cheek... it was so fast, she yelped, but stopped when I commanded and did not go after him. good girl! I caught Si up and he actually fought me while hanging upside down! I took him out and put him in the portable run, alone. he's not getting another chance to attack anyone. I will dispatch him tomorrow after work. I should have a short day, with the 2 newbies taking some of the load off my hands. hate to lose him, as he's so handsome... but he could take Ruby's eye out in a flash...
I almost ripped his head off with my bare hands. Since I have a place to keep him for now, it can wait til I have daylight and tools... I'm going to eat him. I think I will skin him, keep his cape intact.
My understanding is a rooster will defend their flock. Often giving up their own life to protect the hens. The dog, in the roosters eyes was a threat. I doubt that roosters have the ability to know the difference between a dog and a fox or a coyote and the level of threat each poses. I'm also willing to bet that your other roosters are capable of doing, and probably will do the same thing that Si did, when Si is gone. My concern is for the dog. I would cull the rooster only because you have too many and want to eat one of them. If that was a fox then Si would be your hero for doing his job. On the other hand there is nothing wrong with eating chicken for any reason. Just my two cents worth. Might save the dogs eye.

nice discovery MC! Jumbo's are cool. most of mine are in the "large" range now, except the BR's, they are still small, and occasionally pee wee...
how many chickens will you have after the four have gone to their new home tomorrow?

I've spent the evening reading about cockerel/rooster behavior, of course I realize all the stuff that's happened in the last couple of days is completely normal social order stuff. it seems to be the consensus of the varying threads to give Si a time out, as long as 30 days. keep him penned alone, no free range. re-introduce after his time is up. and make decisions for culling at that point.

he may be spared, I'm not sure. he can't get Ruby if he's penned... I'm still pretty PO'd at him. Ruby has never, never, never ever done anything to the gang, (except eat their poop

when they were little chicklets) she may be little, but she guards the flock, they are her babies. my cat Hershey enjoys running full tilt into the middle of a group of chickens and stop on a dime, legs spread, tail whipping... and watch them scatter... Ruby cottoned on to his antics right quick, and he gets sidelined every time now.

I've been held up from typing for a few minutes... got a phone call just now from my GD, so wonderfully adorable! goes like this:
HIIIIIIII Omi!!! I got panties on cuz I used the potty! I'm a big girl Omi! Omi are you proud of me? I 'bout melted! she talked and talked, half I couldn't figure out, but I got "the sun went to bed, can you see Omi?" and of course... Tinkerbell... I miss her so much. I haven't seen her for a year.

anyway, I still have a taste for Si Stew, or Roasted Si with Parsley and Rosemary... I'm gonna have to sleep on it, I guess...

OK, I hear ya. but Ruby is no new-comer to the party. Si knows who she is. my humblest opinion is that Si has been knocked to the very bottom of the social ladder and he's looking for someone to dominate. he's dumb enough to think that he can beat a dog... she's small, but Pugs can be voracious when attacked, and they have locking jaws. he's lucky I was right there, she'd have killed him, might have lost an eye and had other injuries... but she'd have killed him for sure. she didn't because I'm the Alpha here. Over everyone. Si absolutely learned that tonight! I'll let you know as I figure it out... the dog definitely comes first over chickens.

I know your upset. Didn't want you to make a drastic decision you might regret. Just trying to shine a little light on the whole situation. Whatever you do is cool with me. Wish me luck killing some poor innocent deer in the morning.

Yeah, those roos sure can get on your last nerve...why I built. Time out box. I used to want the chickens to not fear the dogs but now I deliberately let the dogs run through and scatter them. So when they see a dog like creature lurking in the brush they will be alert. I also let the roos give the dogs a peak on the nose so they know the business end of a chicken and not to sniff them or trust them either. But then , they are kinda big dogs and tough...not as sweet as Ruby. Things will look different tomorrow.
