Should I buy two of these ladies?

Totally agree with this!!--if you are first starting with chickens, this is not a good way to go! You could have problems with them that would turn you off of chickens forever--diseases for one, behavioural problems, etc...

Plus raising chicks is SOOO much fun and you can bond with them when they are young. Be patient, learn on BYC, and get some nice young chicks in the spring!

POL and younger hens go for $20 here (AZ) - I'm not sure what the price for older hens should be, but if they are truly only 2 years old, $10 doesn't seem too high. Barred rocks are good layers - mine lay huge eggs. If these hens are 2 years old they should still be laying. They might need a different type of feed or be starting a molt. My hens are only 12-14 months old and 5 of them have stopped laying this month (4 of them are molting).

It is always tempting to think you're seeing a bargain or easy fixer-upper whose true value the seller is unaware of. However the seller often turns out to know more about the situation than you did, especially where livestock are concerned. At best, nonlaying allegedly-2-yr-old hens bought out of an ad should be regarded as a gamble. If that entertains you, great... but if your primary goal is to get animals you are pretty sure to be satisfied with (in terms of performance, health, temperament, behavior, etc) then it is probalby not a real smart way to go.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
