Should I call employer?

I applied for a job at a non-profit fitness center on July 20th. I meet the job requirements and the hiring recruit said I can expect a phone call by August 1 or 2. It is now August 3 and no phone call. Should I call today or sometime before August 8th or wait after August 8th? Below is the time-line of the hiring process. I greatly appreciate all feedback. Thanks!

July 22nd – Deadline to submit resumes
July 25th – 28th – Review resumes
August 1st -2nd – Conduct phone interviews
August 8th - Start personal interviews
August 22nd – Offer the position the week of August 22nd

All I can say from my own experience is that any employer that is so unorganized as to forget dates they promised you something for is none that you want anything to do with. I know one doesn’t always have a choice, but I work for one of those companies right now and it is pure hell. People aren’t getting paid on time, when people get laid off nobody – not even the unfortunate ones- know they are laid off, we don’t have money but continue to pay health insurance for people who were fired for doing terrible things months ago… for me it would be a red flag but a follow up call wouldn’t hurt I am sure. Maybe it was just an honest mistake? Good luck! I hope all will work out for you.

It's the 3rd, before lunch, I'd give them untill friday morning, and then call after lunch if no word. You don't want to seem pushy or desperate either.

I wouldn't wait until Friday (nothing ever happens in the business world on Fridays in the summer); I'd give them until tomorrow and then call. I don't do a lot of hiring any more, but I don't think it is "pushy" to give a call and see if you are still a candidate. To me it shows that someone is interested in the position and knows how to follow through.

Ditto. These are very compettetive times, for jobs, and I'd call today. Any employer that finds your stickling for details and punctuality annoying, well, their loss.

Agree also. It's already after the date they themselves specified for call backs. As an employer I would not be put off at all by a follow up call at this point. In this job market you can't afford to be one of the folks who sits back and waits and lets the go getter's get all the jobs!
