Should I even bother?

I called the local state police number and they took my name and number and said a warden would call me. Of course, they didn't say when and as of yet I've heard nothing. The guy at the state police didn't sound too interested. So my brother and I installed an 'Unwelcome Mat' at the bottom of the porch steps....

I was up most of the night and didn't hear/see anything so I am hoping that since there is NOTHING in my yard to attract him he'll move on to greener pastures. There should be plenty of them... it's pretty rural here. He isn't really aggressive, I think he's just looking for the easiest meal he can find... he only came up on the porch because of the slug pellets and who knew they'd want to eat those!

LOL.....Good Idea! I hope you don't have any little kids or pets around!

I've actually seen a couple coops in bear country that had nails like that all over the outside of them.

No little kids and the cats stay indoors.... not sure what the Fed Ex guy thought of it this morning though...

Heard from the Game Warden... he said I was doing everything right and to call if things escalate. No sign of the bear since Thursday night so I guess I just keep doing what I'm doing and hope for the best... My sister's boyfriend (who's a bow hunter) offered to take care of it but only with the warden's permission. I realize I live in and area that's good bear habitat so as long as he minds his manners I have no problem with him, that includes not crapping on my lawn thank you very much!!!!

Good to know they (staties and warden) are on the ball even thru holiday weekend.
You might ask the warden about chicken keeping/protection.
The bear might have just been passing thru....let's hope so.

Are you in Vermont?

Yup, in VT. The bear's been around since spring, and we had one show up now and then last year as well, so he's gonna be around. Just a fact of life. Maybe if he hangs around long enough my sis's BF will get him in November....

Could you tell us:
What brand and model charger you are using?
How specifically you've got it grounded?
and
What brand/and model tester you are using to test the voltage on the netting itself?

Aart, I use a Zareba 10 mile, 1/2 joule low impedance charger. I have an 8' copper clad steel grounding rod driven 6' into the ground, and I am using a 7 light fence tester. I've been shocked by it (the first time I used the tester, I didn't ground it first, so when I touched the fence, I grounded it!) and it packs plenty of punch! The charger is hooked up to 200' of Premier1 48" chicken net fence.
