Hey all! A friend of mine is looking to get rid of a 1yr old all white Cochrin Rooster. I currently have 6 hens (5 BO's and 1 Snowy EE). My girls are very sweet and love to be held cuddled and kissed and will all turn 1 year old in May. Should I adopt this Cochrin Roo from my friend? She says he's very nice and is only getting rid of him because she has too many. I'm worried that he will be mean or not want me to show attention to my girls or let me in the coop to gather eggs and clean. What should I do? Also I should note at this time I'm not interested in having chicks.

If you are not interested in chicks, the point of a rooster is either as a pet, flock protection and/or for looks. If you are interested in keeping a roo, I would just meet the cochin in question and see if he is friendly (Cochins usually are friendly though). Once roosters are 1 yr, they have already reached the maturity (which is when you know if a rooster be an aggressive or docile one).
If you want to know more about some of the cons and pros of a rooster, you can visit this article here---> http://thewayofthechicken.com/index.php/2017/05/07/what-to-know-before-getting-a-rooster/

Cochin roosters are very easy to get along with and are usually gentlemen with the girls. I believe you would enjoy having him.

If you don't want chicks, why bother? Why concern yourself with how gentle he'll be with your hens, or whether he's going to be over-protective to the point of aggressiveness toward you or others?

The big thing is that the relationship you have with your hens will change. Now, your hens look to you as the rooster. If you add a rooster, they will look to him. He will call them for tidbits, he will often stand between you and them. They will be his ladies.

I have had roosters for years, and I really do think they help with daytime predators, but while I like to watch my chickens, I do not snuggle with them, very seldom touch them. My hens adore their rooster. Think he is wonderful.

If this is your first time with chickens, I recommend a hen only flock. If you don't want chicks, no need to get him. However, BO's are prone to going broody, and nothing is more fun than a hen and chicks. But the downside is some of those chicks will be roosters, and one cannot keep them all.
