Should I get a Silkie? :) Why or Why Not?

Yea, its a 6 purchase minimum here too.

I have 2 silkies and 2 sultans and my 6 barred rocks are comming in june. The silkies are calmer than the sultans and a little quieter. They are less messy and a little bit cuter. I got a blue and a black and they are just the SWEETEST things. I would definately suggest one of them!

Since you are home schooled I will give you a little tip, "a lot" is a lot of words, 2 not 1

If you are looking for less than 6 chicks check out http://www.mypetchicken.com/default.aspx
They
are more expensive, but you can order fewer chicks.

Good luck with whatever your decide to get!!

I haven't read what others have said, but here are my thoughts...

you need at least two ... one will be too loney even if you spend time with it...

Silkies ~ seems like everyone likes them, but IMHO, my silkies haven't won my heart yet and if I could give them to you, I would...LOL I'd rather have farm looking birds, maybe they'll grow on me, but I'm worried about them being sooo small that I can't keep them with my big chickens...

They just keep to themselves and aren't nearly as friendly as my Buff Orpington is...they flit away every time I try to spend time with them...and don't seem to like the attention much...I handle them as often as my other birds, and they really don't enjoy it...

If you want eggs, silkie isn't the best choice, they lay teeny eggs and not very many....

Sorry if I'm the only one, but they just don't seem as special as everyone made them out to be

I have to disagree about the eggs, my silkies lay everyday without fail almost all year and the eggs are not that much smaller than the full size chickens. The down side is they always turn broody and won't let you have the eggs!!!!

I second the suggestion that you research and build your own bator. My son and I built one out of a cooler last fall and hatched 3 sebrights. The whole experience was wonderful. I got 5 silkies from the TSC and got lucky with 4 girls and only 1 roo. Mine will be house birds, I have the sebrights, aussies, and ameraucanas outside in various enclosures. So far my silkies are curious and friendly(esp the roo, Julep). They are fast becoming my favorite breed.

I was thinking about just letting the big birds see the silkies for a short visit and see what happens...I only have one enclosure, so if they don't mesh well, the silkies have to go...anyone in central CA want them???
