don't kick yourself over it.. sometimes we just have to accept there are some things we have no control over .. did you tell them that if there's a problem in the future to call you?

i cant really find anything on externally pipping an egg.. if you know of something could you send me the link?

i picked up one of the eggs that was rockin yesterday but not today (that ive seen) and tapped on the egg and just the faintest tap came back (i think,, hope im not imagining it..) do you think this baby in trouble now? i couldnt get it to rock for me... and no peeps..

it CAN take 48 hours from rocking to pipping.. now having said that... it's possible the chick is wore out and can't hatch... and it's also possible that it's perfectly fine and it's just resting.. so the call is yours if you want to punch a hole in the air cell.. but if you do and it's alive and well.. make sure you have wet paper towels handy to wrap it up and put it back in the incubator

ok, so I took one of the eggs in question out and tapped on it again, had my hubby do the same thing and we are both pretty sure we heard faint tapping.. which could mean its trying to internally pip or it could mean its too weak to get out...

so... what would you do?

me?.. well.. i'm a bit insane.. and i have had to do this before.. so I would have wet paper towels at the ready with a bowl of warm water and a Q-tip and go exploring... BUT if you decide to take my insane approach.. remember.. they can still be a day away from hatch... so digging around in a moist membrane with a chick that isn't ready to hatch WILL cause it to bleed to death... so moist membranes are OFF LIMITS... which is why when I do find one like this I immediately wrap it with wet paper towels covering the membrane and put it back into the incubator to finish cooking. I have had them finish hatching on their own this way.. however with the yolk not absorbed.. any poking around you do can inadvertently introduce bacteria to the chick.. which would be a bad thing

the final decision though is yours.. you don't need to do it just because I am insane and would.. you have to find your comfort level and what you feel you should do and go from there

if i just knew we would pip it where the air sac is then i would feel better about it.. but what if he pips right there at the chicks body or happens to hit a blood vessel or something? i tried 2 different flashlights earlier when i was trying to candle and couldnt see anything. maybe i will try to candle again this evening when its darker out. i was in the darkest room in our house but light still comes thru the curtains... hubby is ready to help. he says he can just use his razor knife and just lightly chip at the shell but paranoid me is afraid he might knick the chick..
*sigh...* we have 3-d glasses... why dont we have xray glasses???

you know what i've come to realize? incubating and hatching chicks works a number on you. you become a paranoid mess, it becomes an obsession, you discover what a worry wort you are, you learn one of lifes hardest lessons and thats that you cant save them all no matter how hard you might try.... you can temporarily go insane letting the hatching process consume you and look absolutely ridiculous staring at still eggs all day LOL ... or at least thats whats happened to ME during this whole ordeal!

you most definitely learn a whole lot about yourself too.
