Sometimes eggs won't hatch for a reason.. like when nature (or a broody hen) has decided there's something physically wrong with the chick.. sometimes the chick just isn't physically able to hatch due to a deformity,, those are always hard ones to help because you just never know if it's a defective chick or an exterior reason (like messed up humidity) which is causing the issue.. Personally I would rather assist a hatch than sit back and do nothing.. but that's my choice and in no way am I telling anyone that they MUST assist a hatch... people have to do what they feel is right in these cases.. and I refuse to chastise them for their decisions when it comes to deciding whether to assist or not.. some people feel it's "god's way".. or "let nature take it's course".. and that's fine.. those are their beliefs.. and who am I to say if that way of thinking is right or wrong?... all I know is what works for me..

I totally understand! I'm not trying to be an eager beaver.. I just cant stand the thought of a lil chick needing just a little bit of help at life and denying it that chance. You gave that duck a good chance at life.. one that nature wasnt offering it and at least it got to live and see the world. I hate to think of little ones struggling so much then dying in their shells and never seeing what made all those sounds out there just outside those walls. Everytime a chick hatches they seem to immediately open their eyes at that last good push and see the world for the first time! I guess I'm just a super softie when it comes to animals and cant help but do anything I can to help them. I've nursed run over snakes back to health (one of them recovered but only worked in reverse lol and he now lives in the nature center at Desoto Falls State Park in Alabama :) Squirrels.. 2 hour old kittens.. even a baby buzzard! And theres more but I've gotta get back to my chicks! lol

You did a great thing! Dont 2nd guess yourself! It isnt always a happy ending but you have to know you tried your best and you gave them more of a chance than they ever had otherwise.

God has to love us even more for that :)

Lol.. my problem is that I have been around birds and hatching eggs all my life (way too many years).. my mother even had eggs hatching the day I was born.. my mother was from a farm family of 13 kids.. so a lot of what I know about hatching came from growing up around her family and from the hatches and birds we had while i was growing up... we raised our own chicks from eggs so we could have meat and eggs for the table..
I have an aunt who raises broilers and who had at last count somewhere around 12 commercial broiler houses.. I went to national competition with the FFA back in the 70's for poultry and egg judging (got a gold medal in State and a silver medal at Nationals) I've worked for a commercial hatchery and a commercial poultry processing plant.. I have also worked as a vet tech, done wildlife rescue and rehab, raised parrots... I have eggs in the incubator right now.. 7 brooders filled with chicks and turkey poults in the house at the moment... yeah.. I think at times I have feathers for brains!.. so when it comes to an assisted hatch.. well.. i have done quite a few over the years and pretty much have it down to a science... it's always hard though to help with a hatch long distance since I am not there seeing what's going on and hearing for myself what the chicks are doing.. and ultimately.. they aren't my eggs to decide what to do with.. so it's up to the person who owns the eggs to make the judgement call of what THEY should do

for the suspected duds.. you could always do a float test .. if they are high floaters or sinkers you will know to toss them
eggs that are glowing now are ones that were never fertilized.. so they can get tossed as well
the 3 to 4 good eggs may be ok.. it's really hard to say what their membranes are like through a solid shell.. in a "normal" hatch I would leave them alone and give them time to externally pip

Yay my feather-brained friends are back! :)

Man I just wish you were here YIN! Have I said that already??

Well this morning I see the beginnings of a pip on one of the three.. and theyre still rockin :) Still nothing from the 4th ip egg :-/ If still nothing my hubby is going to help me start the hole in that one when he gets back from work later this morning. I do wish there were a way to see the membranes in the eggs via candling.. that would be awesome! ..... But they wouldn't have a hard time pipping internally and externally as far as a possible dry or shrink wrapped membrane if they didnt have a cracked shell would they? (Its now the 10 i'm talking about that haven't ip as of last night...) So is this really a valid worry?

I now see TWO of the 10 (unpipped as of last night) rockin! :) Still doesnt seem to be any movement from the 2 of those that rocked day before yesterday but not yesterday ;-/

I am still so tired!! So I hooked up my baby monitor right next to the incubator and hopefully i will hear the chirps if something pips! (hubby rolled his eyes when he saw what i was up to..) i think hes beginning to think I have feathers for brains too! I'm probably broodier than the broodiest of hens! lol

off to get a lil more sleep now! <---- well that was an hour ago.. lol... another egg has pipped!
