so I have six eggs that I’ve been incubating with the brinsea mini adance bator. Today is day 21 and 3 of them hatched pretty quickly within pipping with no problem. But one of them pipped at the wrong end of the egg and has been pipped for 24 hrs and the membrane looks and feels bone dry. Earlier in the day the chick was visibly trying to get out and was peeping loudly but now it seems to be giving up. At this point 24 hrs later should I help it? I feel like I’ve waited long enough for it and I should help cause I don’t want it to die!!!!! What do I do??!!

Here’s a pic of it:

Malpositioned chicks pip through inner and outer membranes at the same time and take longer to hatch.

I might take it out and apply coconut oil to the membrane or chip a tiny bit more shell away to see what going on.

If you see red veins after coconut oil: STOP.

As long as it’s not stuck and humidity is high enough it should be ok, although it might have trouble moving to zip.

Just wanted to add that you’re seeing the outer membrane, which looks normal in your pic. There’s a outer membrane and then there’s an inner membrane, which holds all the blood vessels. The hatching process takes so long because the chick is absorbing all these blood vessels and the yolk. You do not want to expose much of that inner membrane because then it will start to dry out. And will need constant lubrication. I’m assuming the chick is out at this point?

No it isn’t :( it’s still breathing and chirping but I tried peeling away a little bit of the membrane and shell and started to draw a bit of blood so I stopped. I don’t know what to do! :(

If there is blood then the chick is NOT ready. Sometimes when they pip at the pointy end they are in funny positions that make it hard for them to absorb the blood and yolk but don’t worry, it will. Just give it time. I’ve had them take a long time. Post a pic if you want.

Okay then it’s a good thing I stopped I think I’ll just try and sit on my hands until it hatches. Here’s a pic of what it looks like now:

I hope I didn’t do any irreversible damage???? The chick is still squirming and chirping. Does it look damaged or do you think it’s going to be okay as long as I leave it alone???

Leave it alone.

Leave it alone.
Definitely agree!!
I definitely will. Do you think it looks damaged?
Just leave it be. It’s not ready. You don’t want the chick getting out before the yolk is absorbed. That can be very dangerous. Just leave it be. The main rule is if there is blood then it’s to soon...not ready to hatch. It should be ok. Just needs more time.
