Should I make a safety hole yet?

Hello! I am very new to this whole incubating eggs thing. It has been around 24 hrs sense the first internal pip (maybe a bit less) last time I had checked around an hour ago there was no external pip yet. Would it be harmful if I where to make a small safety hole? Or should I wait? If so how should I do it and where on the egg would it be placed? Thanks!!!

How do you know baby has internal pipped? is baby peeping/active at the moment?
A safety hole is normally a good idea after 24-30 hours, but it can be harmful if made too big and cause the membrane to dry. It can also cause a slower hatch I have heard.
My duck eggs pipped around 12-24 hours after internal pip. They are very slow hatchers!
What day are the eggs on?

When I checked around 10-11 the duck was close to internally piping (I could se e the beak through the air sack, but it wasn’t quite broken through yet) then when I checked around 9 I could hear tapping and chirping. So as of right now I’m assuming that it has been 17-20 hours. The breed is khaki/pekin mix. And I believe that khakis tend to hatch earlier ( it is day 26-27, so basically right on time)

I would wait until 24 hours. I know it’s hard not to intervene. If you do need to make an air hole there is a good article about assisting, but basically you’ll candle and make sure you’re away from baby but in the air cell and then use a screw to twist a small hole being careful not to Crush the egg.

Any change today?

It hadn’t made one, so I made a small place for it to breath. I’m just waiting for it to absorb the veins- because I don’t want to mess with it too much until I see that the veins have gone away. Hoping for the best!

I think you made the right choice, after 24 hours it does feel a bit tense.
Safety holes rarely do any harm, if done correctly then they can be life savers!
But yes, do wait now, now baby has plenty of air, he should begin the hatch once all absorbed.
-I should add that this can take a couple days

Assisted hatching article
here, just helps to have a read of it, even if you dont have to assist any further, you'll find it very informative.
