Should I take this squab?

One of my pairs has done well raising a squab, they hid it from me quite well, I only noticed it late last week! Took this pic this morning



Top pic the squab, bottom pic is its parents. Yesterday they were still feeding it today they have stopped. He hasnt attempted to come out. He's up a bit high too so Im concerned for his safety. Also its gone freaky cold...From 35C to 25C in a day, so he will be cold too. I really want to clean the box because it smells ripe too.

Its no trouble too pop him in a cage for a few weeks and hand feed him, I just want to know if its in his best interest. The pair have been mating like crazy so I think they want him out....Where can I get some of those fake eggs for birth control?

If they aren't feeding him and he acts really hungry then I'd take and hand feed him.

I think mumma bird fed him last night but only once. I hear him screeching for food and they just sit there kinda going "did you hear something?" I think it would be fine for him to get out of the nest now but he cant fly yet and there's no safe path to the food and water.

At that age they only feed them 2 or 3 times a day.. and leave them alone in the nest too.... so you probably don't have to worry. The female usually stops feed the squab altogether and gets ready to lay more eggs.. while the male is left in charge of the squab until its weaned.

If you are concerned.. just have a feel of the squabs crop in the evening... If there is food in there you will know its getting fed enough.

Im just a worry wort. I always want to interfere. Too often nature has let me down, so I just worry for the lil guy. I also like hand raising, bonding. Its about the same age my Mr Pige was when I rescued him.

Each pair is better off with two nests, them being a nest space apart. then father takes over better at a couple weeks after hatching while female lays and cares for new eggs and young till they are couple weeks old.. then repeated repeatedly. lol
if only one nest, when all nesting problems start, and can be solved by two nests per female.

Yes I just read that in my new pigeon book...I did not know this when I was building my coop! When I took pictures of it everyone said and I quote, "You have plenty of room" Squabby was just getting big when I read that, so I was like "Oh dear" Theres room for more boxes but I havnt the equipment or means to do renovations right now (Im showing a horse next week, money and time are all tapped out) so they are just going to have to cope. Ive noticed momma bird feeding squabby today. I just dont want a disaster - like him falling out and getting attacked by another bird - on a night Im busy with the horse. I figure the only way to guard against that is take him out and look after him myself...But Im about to work 2 ten hour days so it would be better for him to stay with them for the moment, so long as he doesnt flop off the shelf when Im at work!

If you lean a few wooden planks or boards against the wall he will hide behind them when he comes out the nest and the other birds won't attack him.

I always have a place for the chicks to hide when they first leave the nest... and have had no problems with adults attacking them.

Check the squabs crop you can easily tell if he is being fed regularly. Sounds to me you have good parents to begin with. I would be inclined to let nature take it's course. preceeding with caution is always a good idea for sure !!!

They seem to be back on the job. Donna doesnt like me looking in the nest so she's looking after baby a lot more. Max is pestering her to start sitting again but I think she's told him it has to wait!

Putting a few boards against the wall is a great idea. I'll do that until I can put in some renovations.

Razor is also sitting on a squab today.

Isha laid an egg on the floor...I told her with her track record that was a very smart idea.
