Should I take this squab?

It died. I found it today. I feel so awful, if I had just looked in the box over the weekend this wouldnt have happened. He was dead right at the front of the box like they just pushed him out. I dont know if they stopped feeding him or something else happened. I was hearing the regular squeaking so I thought he was being fed, turns out the squeaking was from wild birds in the hedge.

The other two have a good sized squab I wont let this happen again.

I know this maybe of little consolation. That being said sometimes parents of a squab will stop feed it because it has something lacking in it's genetic makeup or overall health. I seen this a few times when squabs are abandon and hand reared most times the offspring never seem to thrive. As cruel as it may seem sometimes it is for the best. If the pair are not fist time parents i would suspect that may be the case.
They were first time parents but I do keep thinking, he wasnt trapped in there. It wasnt that far to get food and he didnt even try so maybe he wasnt right. Its just sad that I'll never know

If you pair lays eggs again, In my experience... they cock will still tend to the squab. So he is going to be put on a lot of pressure. What I do when this happens is use fake eggs until the squab is big enough to venture on its own.

But it seems your pair has gone back to normal behavior... so that is good.
If you keep them on a heavy good diet then they will not have trouble raising one squab while sitting on eggs.

Best of wishes,
Doig

If Your birds all are all having trouble either or all of: getting both eggs to hatch, one squeaker (term used when not for meat "squabbing") dying shortly or withering after hatch, up to both withering not growing etc, n or sour milky chalky runny poo, could all be paratyphoid/salmonila infection of parents. Can happen seeming easiest if song birds nesting close to loft also causing other probs n parisites. insects n rodents routinely carry into coops even when wild bird dropping n feather dust even doest easily. i had a batch of birds with years ago n now recently again, from one rescued bird each time kept with n too close to others. I've found scraping, shop vacing n dawn dish soap sprayer or vinager, all good together n seperate ways of preventing this, n heat n probiotics best way to stop.

Thanks for posting! I havnt had time to update but the couple next door raised a squab very sucessfully. Hes fully grown now and the father bird was very attentive even after they sat new eggs. I will post some pics soon. The two that lost one are trying again, not hatched yet.
