I have been faced with a similar situation with hawks. I watch all over while they range in the open back area of our acerage. They don’t go far, but I have seen hawks getting close, and although I can’t shoot them, I carry my big net. I will protect my chickens on my land just like I would my dog and cat. If one ever gets in striking range, I will surely throw a swing with the net and bat him down in the fields, for sure.

Aerial predators can't swoop down if you hang netting over a large area. I used it until I finished my run.Its a Federal crime to harass, trap, injure or harm protected species of aerial predators such as hawks & owls (even if they're attacking your flock)

Well, luckily it hasn’t come to that. I have 10 black chickens in my flocks, and my rooster is amazingly aware. They stay close to me and I’m always on alert, and the space they range in is relatively small. We also have a yorkie and a granddaughter that we have to watch because of an owl that my husband has seen. I guess I’ll take my chances with the feds if I have to shoe away something trying to attack my animals or granddaughter. 🙄

Shooing it away, and catching/shooting, two very different things
