I have four chickens around 8weeks old that i am planing on raising for 4-H. I want to show them at the fair next summer and i was wondering if there is anything special i should be doing with my birds to be able to show them. Any help would be great! Thanks.

I haven't noticed a lot of showing help on this site. I'm interested in showing as well, although I am well beyond 4-H age. I recomend going to county fairs and talking with kids there. Don't be shy; I have never found someone uninterested in talking about their animals! Good luck.

I'm not sure if 4-H works the same in each area, but I suspect it will be similar. You need to get in touch with the 4-H people in your area. Your county fair office can probably give you information. There are quite a few requirements to be met as far as record keeping etc. I would recommend you do that as soon as possible if you haven't already. At our fair, all of the 4-H projects will be under a supervisor who makes sure everybody has an equal chance to compete, and would answer your questions about care or at least get you pointed towards the right info. 4-H is a great program, and you should have a lot of fun being involved.

4H can be very different from one area to another. Contact the 4H through your county extension office; join a 4H poultry club.

There is a fair amount of showing information presented on this forum--specifically what do you want to know?

Make sure your birds fit the standard for their breed & variety. Feed a quality diet and keep in good condition. Treat for mites/lice/worms as necessary. Find out if vaccination or testing is required in your state; every state varies--some require no tests or vaccines, others have numerous requirements.

If you plan to do showmanship, study, and train your bird to accept handling.
