I have pine shaving down on the damp cold ground. In the hot 6 months May-October the floor is dry and dusty. I didn't need to add a dust bath until late October. This old Rubbermaid 33gal is about 14" tall and still has its bottom. I dug out the floor a little bit and countersunk and cut the front side lower so they could step in.

Nice. My dream is to have a contained area just for dust bathing that protects from rain, snow, and sleet. Maybe this summer I can get something made.
 
One of the things you must keep in mind, is that if you’re going to use wood ash, you need to keep it dry. Wood ashes become caustic when wet, and can hurt your chickens.
