I'm building anything handicap haha

LOL. Understand. If you have any kind of saw PVC is very easy to cut. The worst that could go wrong would be if it cracked or chipped a little and that wouldn't affect the feeder.

That's why I built the feeder like that - there was very little cutting involved - in fact the only cutting required is to cut the length of it to fit into the run...and you can buy lengths of PVC already cut and all you need to do is buy the Y-section, the bottom cap and the top caps and hook them up and that's it.

I've seen other PVC feeders here that require holesaw cuts which work better if you have lots of birds but this way it doesn't require drilling or cutting if you already have the PVC to the length you require.

You can cut the pipe even if you don't have a saw.
All you need is some nylon string (masons line).
Wrap it around each of your hands and saw back and forth like a saw.

Ozzie,
how do you keep the food from staying in the bottom of the Y?
I would think the Y would have to be 4 or 6" in order for the chickens to get their head down in there and then I was worried about food sitting in the bottom for too long as they ate what came out on top.

I really like the idea as a waterer though and may give it a try!

I'm all for PVC working as it does well in our winters and is super easy to clean. I gotta post my photos of the feeder we made. It is wonderful! So easy a *girl* can do it.

There's a cap on the bottom of the Y which keeps the food in - and if you need to clean it, just take it off and hose. They seem to just eat the top portion and as the food from the top diminishes, then eat the food off the bottom section. Seems to work quite well.

Also the fines (dusty bits of the feed) just seems to accumulate on the bottom - they seem to pick out the seeds/grain and leave the fines and so that's what seems to accumulate down the bottom of the Y - which is okay because they don't seem to like eating that anyway.

cheers

I bought some auto feeders/water at walmart, which the feeder works well, the water seems to get dirty faster...I also have just an old gold planter with no holes in it for water in their chicken run. My daughter said she saw them swim in it...I haven't seen them do that, just drink out of it-lol.
