He did spend some money on rails to make the drawer slide smoothly, as he couldn't find anything to work the way he wanted. Not sure what they cost, but they weren't cheap.

Hardware can be expensive. I look for options when it comes to hardware, but sometimes a person just has to bite the bullet and buy what they need.

So it was more of a "I want to make something cool out of this pallet" project.

All my pallet projects, so far, have been things I can immediately use, like the raised beds, planters, storage bins, workbenches, etc.... I hope to someday build up my skill level and make something just for the "coolness" of the project. But my list of future pallet projects is pretty long before I ever get to that type of project.

Yeah, the rails or whatever they're called weren't cheap at all. He had to custom order the length.

This was one of those, "Oh, wouldn't it be cool to build a thus and so out of such and such? projects. Then when you get into it far enough, you realize that to do it right, you gotta spend the bucks. And you have put too much time into doing a craftman's job to skimp on the hardware.

Ran a few errands in town today. Got a free 5 gallon bucket (with purchase) from Harbor Freight on their Superbowl Weekend sale. Then picked up a nice pallet with half a sheet of 5/8 inch plywood in really good condition. That half sheet of plywood is probably worth $15-$20 off the shelf, so, definitely worth my time and effort to throw it into the pickup. Love it when I can find those special pallets. I am building up a collection of used plywood pieces for something....

I use a dog house with the floor removed for our ducks. I put a brick in the opening and toss some hay in for them to make their mound. I use that just for convenience because a neighbor gave me a few nice heavy plastic, insulated dog houses. Their house is in a covered run.

Our goose likes her pallet wood nesting box. The pallets were cut in half horizontally next to the center support so top and bottom still has a heavy support going across it. Three half pallets fastened together in a u and a roof made of plywood, covered over with metal sheeting and then the whole works is covered in palm branches for deep shade and partial door covering...the palm branches drape down in front and cover half the door area. That house is out in full sun.

Free plastic insulated dog houses sound like a great deal. Nice repurposing of those plastic doghouses. You can't beat free, plus already built!

@chickengr FWIW, if you go the doghouse route, there are lots of pics on Google of pallet wood doghouses....

I think for a duck/goose house, I'd opt for no floorboards and just have it sitting on the bare ground. When I had ducks and geese, they made a mess out of all the bedding in their house, and I was constantly cleaning out the old straw and putting in new straw. My duck/goose house was so smelly (due to the floorboards) after the summer that I basically just cut up the wood and burned it.

Thinking about it a little more, if I was to build a new duck/goose house, instead of having a wooden floor, I think I would build skids on the house so I could easily move the house whenever I wanted to cleaner ground. Just let the old straw/bedding sit on the bare dirt and become a nice fertilizer for future growth. Instead of cleaning out the house, just move it!
