Show Me Your Pallet Projects!

⚠️ Outdoor Pallet Wood Chairs and Table

:caf I was watching the ABC Evening News tonight and noticed this scene of two guys at the beach sitting on some pallet wood chairs with a pallet wood table. Looks pretty good to me. I think it might be great around a fire pit, fire ring, BBQ grill, etc... in the backyard. No plans or anything like that, just took a screenshot of the chairs and table. Here for your consideration...

This must have been an amazing conversation for the world to witness.

Sorry I totally forgot to ask my neighbor when I talked to him last about the sawhorses! I'll get back to you on that!

such chairs would look good near your planters.

This must have been an amazing conversation for the world to witness.

:idunno It was part of a feel-good story about the son of actor Christopher Reeves (Superman) going back to some of his father's early documentary work with whales. I'm not sure it was an amazing conversation.

I was just interested to see those chairs and table made from pallet wood. I thought they really fit the scene on the beach and would probably work just as well in my backyard by the fire ring. So, I grabbed a screenshot and posted it in case I want to try to make something like that in the future.

If I can find a YouTube video or some other instructional on how to make them, I'll post a link. I think some of you smart people out there could figure it out just by the picture. I'm just learning. If I can find a video on how to make them, I'll share what I find.

It looks like a pallet project I might be able to do and have fun in the process. I usually prefer keeping the wood unfinished and natural looking as possible.

 I imagine that you would have to sand down the chairs pretty good if you are going to sit in them without getting splinters. Maybe some type of waterproof sealer on the wood after the sanding. Of course, some people might prefer to stain of paint them as well. I'm just not that creative.

It's hard for me to tell how much finish work was done on the pallet wood for that project. I just liked the look of them.

⚠️ Fence Picket Planter Box -> Pallet Wood Planter Box

Just watched a nice new YouTube tutorial video on making a planter box out of picket fence boards. Should be easy to use pallet wood instead of buying picket fence boards. If you go to his YouTube post, you can request FREE plans and a cut list for this project by entering "PLANS" in a comment.

Here is a screenshot of the completed project...

I would suggest you could easily modify the size of this design to fit your needs, keeping in mind the basic way to build the planter. Also, just want to mention that you don't need to run your boards through a planer to get the wood completely smooth. Well, I would not bother with that using pallet wood planks, but that is me. He makes these picket fence planters to sell. I just make stuff for myself.

Here is a link to the new ~11 minute YouTube tutorial build video that I think you might enjoy...

⚠️ Learn the "better" way to shoot brad nails

Not to pick on the previous guy showing how to make those planters, but I have been using a brad nailer for the past ~3 years in most of my pallet wood projects. There is a more "correct" way to shoot your brad nails to minimize sidewall "pop up", "blowouts", or whatever else you want to call it. Instead of shooting the brad nail in line with the wood, you just rotate the nailer 90 degrees, making a "tee" to the wood, and then shooting the nail.

Here is a YouTube short on this technique...

:hit In any case, make sure you keep your fingers far away from where you plan to shoot the nail. I had to learn that lesson, once, the hard way. The only thing that hurt worse than my finger with the brad nail sticking in it was my pride being hurt! :tongue

🤔 Well, thinking more about it, my finger hurt a lot worse, for a few days. Just keep your fingers clear of any possible blow out of the nails. My 18-gauge brad nail is one of my favorite tools for my pallet projects. You just have to give it some respect or it will bite you!

:caf Starting to feel closer to spring where I live. We had a few days above freezing. Snow is melting and grass is starting to show out on the lawn. Songbirds are out singing on a sunny day. Everything seems to be waking up from the long winter nap. I moved my car outside of the garage and started setting up shop inside.

Enough snow has melted that I was able to walk to my lumber pile in the backyard today and picked out some reclaimed 2X4's to build an adjustable height workbench for my new Menards table saw that I bought weeks ago. I have about half that project figured out in my mind, and expect I'll figure out the other half once I start building it. That's just the way it for me on some projects. Good thing is that with pallet/reclaimed wood, you can experiment with builds and not feel too bad if it does not work out and you need to start over.

Well, a bench/stand for that table saw is project #1 on my list.

Dear Wife has already asked me to build some more pallet wood raised beds and planters like I did last year. No problem. I have a few other projects on my wish list, and if I get them done, I'll post pics.

:clap As always, I hope to hear from others on what projects they are working on or will be working on this year. I stand by ready to be inspired by others. Later...

I need to make milking station for goats. their legs have to be tied as they keep kicking. any idea anyone?

I have never had goats, and never had to deal with kicking goats. But I found this Goat Hobble article online which might help. They claim it is an extremely humane way to stop kicking goats. Here is a screenshot that maybe you can enlarge...

I don't know what you have available in Greece, but a quick search on Amazon came up with many results...

And, not to forget, here is a picture of a pallet wood goat milking stand...

Here is a link to 9 Tips for Training a Goat on the Milking Stand that might be helpful. They discuss kicking goats.

I'll defer to anyone with actual experience on this subject, but those links might get you started in the right direction.

:fl Hope you find a solution that works for you.

⚠️ Safety First - Always!

:caf I just watched a short YouTube video on a scrap lumber project, made by a young kid. I like watching those videos because I have lots of scrap lumber left over from many of my pallet projects. I was not too particularly interested in the kid's project, but I thought it was worth the time to see how he did it because maybe someone else would have more use for his scrap wood project.

:tongue To my horror (I guess I'm getting really old), this kid was using a table saw with his fingers way too close to the blade, no eye or hearing protection at all, and basic techniques that were putting him in danger around his power tools. I could not help but to think this kid will be called eight-finger Freddy or one-eyed Pete before he graduates High School. And I don't mean that to be funny at all - it's not.

:old Over 50+ years of working with wood, I have made my fair share of missteps. Mostly minor injuries that hurt my ego more than my body. ...Should have known better mistakes... But I have managed to keep all my fingers, both eyes, and my hearing is still great. I am ever so thankful to my Junior High School shop program back in the 1970's that required us to pass a safety exam on any and all power tools before we were allowed to use them. We were required to use safety equipment and use best practices around tools. To this day, I still use push sticks to keep my fingers away from spinning blades, safety glasses to protect my eyes from flying debris, and hearing protection while using almost all power equipment.

:hit I was going to leave a friendly comment on that kid's YouTube video comment section about my safety concerns for him, but he had the comments turned off. Maybe other old guys like me had already seen the video and mentioned his unsafe practices. Sometimes comments can really be cruel on social media. For whatever reason, his comments were turned off.

:clap Well, I had to get that off my mind. I hope everyone uses safe practices when working with power tools and uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for their hands, eyes and ears. May we all have many safe years of enjoying our hobbies into old age. Thank you for reading to the end of this of this post. Stay safe!
