Show Me Your Pallet Projects!

@raingarden you can paint over it with no bleed through. It cures solid.

@gtaus I'm also wondering about the heat effects here. South and north side has good shade, west side (hottest) is unpainted and has a 10x14 covered run in front of it. This side faces East so hoping to skip painting it...but guessing I'll have to.

This is what I used:
https://henry.com/retail/asphalt-an.../107-asphalt-emulsion-sealer-and-damp-proofer

It is used to coat the inside of planters to extend their life but don't believe it's non-toxic. For paint on waterproofing there's also rubberized roofing. Again, no idea on toxicity. Lots of houses have flat roofs here and there's a wide range of products for coating them to keep them from leaking. The asphalt however also helps preserve wood.

Hoping to make it last as well as plywood. Not sure that's doable, but this is my try at it. This osb was beautiful when I bought it over the summer, but I was still in a cast boot at the time. I had it stacked and covered with a tarp. Rain leaked through and caused some damage. Hoping this mitigates that.

@gtaus was just thinking about your planters. I built a small pond out of an 8' satellite dish years and years ago. It had some small holes that needed filled and I also wanted to make sure the metal didn't rust out or leak toxins that kill the fish. I bought some waterfall sealant and sealed the entire inside of the pond. It foams as it comes out of the can and I used gloved hands to pat it out and spread it like paint. Worked wonderful and it's still holding perfectly. No idea if it's human level safe...but non-toxic to fish might mean it is. One $14 can (price back then) worked to cover the entire dish used that way. Can't remember how long ago that was but its probably been around ten years ago.

Editing to add that I spread it super thin except at the holes. On wood I think it'd need spread thicker. Might have been longer then ten years...I remember my kids swimming in it before I added fish and plants and they were little.

Thanks for the link. It looks like that asphalt sealer is not non-toxic, so I'll pass on using this inside the planter idea as a water reservoir. I think there might be other alternatives that are safe. I would think a product that was safe for fish in a pond would be safe to grow food.

As safe as a pond liner is my guess. 🤷‍♀️

I hope yall have made some spectacular projects!!!

I've finished some and am planning some.

:frow Great to hear from you again. Wondering where you went? Winter hibernation?

Well, it's been a long winter for me here in northern Minnesota. But I hope to start making some more pallet projects in a few months when it warms up outside. Still have about 2 feet of snow everywhere, but it's getting a bit warmer every week.

I managed to pick up a number of pallet loads on my weekly trips to town this winter, so I have stacks of pallet wood to work with this summer. Top of my list is more pallet raised bed gardens for the back yard.

:caf Would love to see the pics of your finished projects, and of course, what are in your plans coming up.

I missed a ton and hadn't seen a notification in a long while!!!

:idunno Unfortunately, the BYC forum will send out a notification or two on new posts on a thread, but if you don't click the link, it just stops sending you notifications. I guess the system is self-pruning that way, and you don't continue to get notifications on threads that appear to no longer interest you. I would prefer to get notified until I chose to opt out of a thread. I, too, have missed a notification on a thread I wanted to follow, thinking that the subject matter was dead, but later discovered that it was still quite active, and I did not know about it.

No winter hibernation here, just missed some notifications I guess lol. Idk how, but alas...I did.

Nice!!! I love getting pallets lol.
Did you get any big ones?? Or all standard 48x42??

Your raised beds always look nice!!! Excited to see your new ones!

I finished up the Chicken Chalet and refenced the goat pen with pallets as the original fencing just wouldn't be strong enough. My goats should be being born very soon!!
The chicken chalet is FULL of baby chicks. I have 32 in it that I am brooding, group named The Galaxies.

I've made their ladder to the roosts from the left over of the pallet I used to make my broom/mop holder.

Eta ..I am planning a 16x16 shed for my next project...last pic is the before 🤣🤣🤣

The pallets I got have been more or less standard size, but I think you might have missed that I picked up a number of pallets with solid 5/8 inch plywood on top! That was a great find. Don't know what I'm going to make with that plywood, but it was in good shape. Maybe use the plywood for something like a workbench top.

Your raised beds always look nice!!! Excited to see your new ones!

I have had real success with my current design, but I might try a few other raised bed designs this year.

:idunno I don't know. Sometimes it's hard to mix it up when you are already happy with your current design.

I have been trying to talk Dear Wife into letting me get some goats. She is not there yet. Maybe you could post some pics of the baby goats?

Love chick pics. My backyard flock is only 10 hens. Do you sell excess eggs? 32 hens sounds like a small business plan to me....

I've made their ladder to the roosts from the left over of the pallet I used to make my broom/mop holder.

One of my earliest posts was on the pallet holder I made for the shovels, rakes and hoes out in the garden. Pallets make good, fast, and strong holders for those long-handled tools.

I was surprised to see baby chicks on your pallet ladder. With wide boards like that, do the chicks have a hard time climbing up the ladder? My coop ladder was a solid piece of 1X6 wood with thin slats every six inches and that has worked for my adult sized chickens. I guess maybe I did not give enough credit to the chicks ability to climb a ladder like your pallet ladder. That would be super easy to make - just cut it off the pallet - done! Great idea.

One last question, how long have you had that pitchfork with the plastic tines? I was looking at them last year but did not know if the plastic tines would hold up after years of use. I ended up buying a much heavier pitchfork with metal tines. But I sure liked the lightweight plastic tine pitchfork and almost got it.

:old I am getting to the age where lightweight tools are more valuable to me than in years past. Just trying to save stress on the back so I can sleep well at night.
