Years ago, I had a problem with a neighbor's dog(s) digging around my pepper and tomato plants. I found if I put a simple wire tomato cage around the plants the dog(s) would not dig there.

I am generally not a big fan of those wire tomato cages, but I had a lot of them passed on to me from my father. So, I used them. If/when I ever need more tomato cages, I think I will try to build the cages out of salvaged/pallet wood.

You can see how the original bean plants are sticking up above the frame. That's OK. I put on the original cover on top and expect to get another 1-2 weeks of use out of it before I have to remove both the extension and the top cover with the chicken wire...

Well, I had to take the protective pallet wood cover with chicken wire and the extension off the planter today. The original bean plants were pushing up against the chicken wire. So, I got about one more week of protection from the squirrels using the extension. The new bean seeds I started a week ago to fill in the gaps where the squirrels either ate the seeds or pulled out the bean plants have sprouted and are about 2 inches tall. I hope the squirrels leave them alone now.

I was hoping to get maybe an additional 2 weeks of protection using that pallet wood extension, but my bean plants are growing too fast. Oh well, it was worth the effort as every day counts.

Squirrel Nest In BBQ...

Not only are the squirrels getting into my garden beds, but yesterday we were going to BBQ up some hamburgers and found this when we opened the top...

This is like the fourth time we have had to clean out the BBQ grill from nest making this year. For now, we are just keeping the top open to discourage any more nest building attempts. I would have thought that the squirrel would have already moved on to a better nesting location.

Maybe she likes the BBQ grill because it's so close to the bird feeder that she also frequents...

Well, not much related to pallet projects except in the sense of why I have to build protective pallet wood covers and extensions to keep the squirrels out. It is a boom year for the squirrels, and they are everywhere this year.

A buddy of mine, in construction, dropped these off at our house and asked if I could use them...he has a few dozen, if I want them. Brand new pallets that are used when shipping floor panels. Should I take them? (Rhetorical question..hehe)

Yep, that wood looks in great shape. There is no end to what you could use pallets with solid tops like that. I look forward to hearing what you do with them.

FYI, I keep one of those type of solid top pallets in my garage and throw it on some sawhorses when I need a quick and simple worktop. Great that the solid top means my nails and screws, nuts and bolts, etc... stay on top of the workbench and don't fall in between slats like a normal pallet. When done using it as a tabletop, I just take it off the sawhorses and store it vertically along a wall. Takes almost no room in my garage.

Be sure to update your score when you put the pallets in use for something. I am always interested in how people use their pallets. Thanks.

Update on Pallet Wood Raised Bed Trellis System

Earlier this spring, someone suggested that I consider using the string method of trellising my indeterminant tomatoes. I looked more into that system and it looked like something I could try.

I built a trellis system over one of my raised beds. It's just salvaged 2X4's that I had from some long pallets and/or leftover wood from previous projects. Here is a picture of the framing...

I dropped down strings from the top and used tomato/plant clips to attach the string to the stems. Here is a closeup of that...

So far, I really like this system to trellis my tomatoes. It's really easy. I ordered a string trellis kit from Amazon that includes 30 hangers and 100 clips for less than $20.00. That's a whole lot cheaper than buying 30 wire tomato cages!

Bonus: Speaking of wire tomato cages, I have a number of wire cages that were coming apart at the welds. I was considering just getting rid of them, but I found a way to repair them using zip ties. Here is a picture of one of the newer tomato cages that I fixed using zip ties to attach the ring to the legs...

That repair seems to holding well. All for about 1 penny per zip tie. Can't beat that for a quick, cheap fix.

If/when I ever need new tomato cages, I still have in mind to make them out of some scrap pallet wood, like these...
