Show me your quail pens!!!

What a cute little quail house! I was thinking of using sand in the bottom of one of mine. How often and how do you clean the sand?

I clean the sand everyday with a cat litter scoop. It takes a couple minutes, the sand is always clean and there is practically no smell (i do sparkle a little DE in there) ! They are currently on straw and pine shaving for the winter and i can't wait to use sand again. I will use brand new sand when spring comes. I highly recommend it if you want to give it a shot!

Thanks! I have mine on wire now with nest boxes filled with straw. The straw gets gross so fast. Their poo doesn't always go through the 1/2"X1/2" wire either so with lots of birds in it, it gets stinky fast. I want to build a small ground pen with a sand floor for the next batch I hatch out this spring. I have a 4'x4' chainlink kennel that I want to put a divider in and make 2 pens on the ground. I hope to put 8 to 10 birds on each half until they are old enough to replace my older birds. It's too hard for me to hatch more than 20 at a time because the only spot I can raise the stinky fellas is in my spare bathroom.

OMG I feel you, I love hatching eggs but the smell.. argh.. I don't have a spare bathroom so my apartment usually starts smelling like a farm. Sounds like a good set up for your baby quails! I strongly believe that a ground pen is the way to go :)

Ok, I cleaned mine up!!!

This is the new quail cage. It has room to house two quads. Right now I only have one quad in there (you can see the side that doesn't have the 1/4" hardware cloth on the bottom). Not quite finished yet either. Still have some painting and cleanup to do. :)
