Just a quick update got the cage about half finished and they got an emergency call for work. Good thing i have about another 4-5 days before my quail will be ready for these. Turned out great to house a few 5 week old roos this week! Still have to put the upper solid doors for heat retention, the dropping trough and the cold weather slides for tbe screen doors. But the water system is fantastic! And anyone still struggling with food loss i highly reccomend making you a set of those feeders. Have them in my brooder and not a single piece of food is wasted easily cut the food per day in half! And the quail seem to love it. Anyone need any help let me know! Have a great day guys and gals!

I saw a video online that used a 2 liter bottle filled and a trough that had caps at the end which stops the side to side head shake food loss. So i figured it could be improved and had spare pipe went to work on figuring out best size to allow food to continue to fall without being too big. So this is the final product and it works fantastic. Only thing i may do for one extra thing is put a shroud over the top just low enough to keep them from perching on it. If you would like pics and info i can post anything you need.

Start a thread if you will Richard... Share what you're willing to about your feeders. A lot of folks fight this problem... Thanks.

This goes back to Fat Daddy's post with the water bucket.. page 82 ish? About your watering system.... Where is the water exiting from the bucket... on the side? Is it a bulk head fitting you've used? I've been trying a similar set up for water but found I needed a square sided bucket for the bulk head to work properly....

The bulk head fitting is drilled in the bottom on the bucket. you can see in the pic I used tubing. The bucket sits on a pair of 2"x6" to give the bulk head fitting room to hang down.

Fat daddy thats a killer coop! Mind if i steal the idea lol? My coop works fantastic for its purpous but i need more room now. A lot of people are asking for quail i think these birds are making a strong comeback around my area. But bravo on the coop on your waterer are you using nipple waterers?

HA! I shamelessly stole it from a old friend and long time member Milliebantam from Rhode Island .... Mine has quail on one side and rabbits on the other. His had rabbits on both sides.......Good luck with your build....

Thank you it will be very very near future. Next batch just went into the incubator. Ill keep the design i did for me breeder cages and that one for housing the non breeders. Mind if i ask how you did the dropping pan and if it has anything you think could improve or if it works perfect?

The droppings pans are really the plastic poop pans for 24" x 24" rabbit cages sold at TSC type stores. I drilled a 1/2" hole on the low corner so rain water can drain out. The pans just sit on top of the cage below. In hind sight, i would eliminate the bottom row of pens and keep the other two the same height. predators tryed the bottom pens 90% of the time and kept those birds stressed. That and tending the lower cages was when most of my escapees made their break. All bent over you are more likely to lose one. If you dont want to run rabbits on one side, two rows on each side would be a nice set up for breeders and grow out pens....

EDIT TO ADD: Dont use clear tubing from the bucket to the water nipples. crap will grow in it if light gets thru. first thing you know and the nipples will be plugged with brown slime or green alge!
