Here is some pics of our setup. The coop is the A-frame on the left and the run extends to the right of it. We chose to use wooden lattice due to the look of it as well as our dogs, this way they won't be able to see in as well only once close up. We had two chick murders in the past and are trying everything to keep the hens safe yet comfortable.

The second pic is of the run standing with the coop in my back. We have divided the run with a partial fence due to the fact that our ducks are very messy and this keeps the run better suited for both species.

The third pic is of the run looking at the coop.

The last pic is of our duck setup. The"pond" is just a kid sandbox with a hole in the bottom with a drain plug in it. Every night I pull the plug out and the water drains into a huge hole I dug underneath the deck. The deck is there to keep the mud down and it works amazingly well.

Isn't it amazing how many cool set ups there are out there?

Wonderful pictures! Thanks everyone for posting. We are first time chick owners. Building our coop right now. Run to come next. Live in a town so I can't have a large run. Will post pictures as soon as its finished. I have posted or tried to post a few pictures of our coop being built. It is purple and an octogon! Playhouse type. We need to be able to move our run and coop. Would a 3'foot height run be too short for six hens? Run dimensions of 6'by8'? Lot's of great ideas from looking at your runs. Will post pictures of our run when finished!

Here's ours. It is built entirely out of cedar because I didn't want any chemicals from treated wood leaching into the ground. The corners are 4x4s attached to metal brackets set in concrete. We dug a trench and sunk a concrete "wall" into the ground around the entire coop and run - 12 inches deep, 6 inches thick - so that no predators could dig under the fence into the run or get under the coop. Into the concrete trench, we sunk 1/2 inch hardware cloth (wire mesh), which we used to completely cover the walls and roof.

Here are construction photos. My run is 12' x 38', chain link with chicken wire 3 feet high inside the chain link and 3' under and out away from the chain link. So diggers are discouraged. The support poles are concreted in 3' deep.

The top is being covered with netting. The girls like it so we are all happy.

This site is incredible! Thanks all for the knowledge. How large an area for 45 chickens? Anyone have a problem with wind as I have here in IN?

45 birds = 185 square foot of coop space and 450 square foot of run.

A 12' by 16' coop would be (192sf) fine..

Unless you're talking 45 Bantams, which I doubt..

Run is 18 x 24ft.......4 x 4 posts are set in concrete, 2 x 2inch woven wire all the way around, poly 'flight netting' over
top, hardware cloth 'apron' laid 3 feet out from bottom (covered with stone dust) and 3 feet up the sides. 4 strands of
electric wire are currently being installed......and the height of the 'walls' of the run are 6 1/2 ft.
9 chickens (8 hens and a roo) will be in this run on the days I work, and free-range on 3 acres, on the days I am home.

In 2 weeks I will be the proud mom to 1 Light Sussex roo, 2 Light Sussex pullets, 2 lavender Silkie pullets, 2 Black Copper
Marans pullets and 2 'true' Ameraucana pullets! WhooHoo!!!!
