My Coop
My Coop
Part of the new coop includes a roof overhang to use as a storage area already and I'd thought of asking DH to design a rack to hold the mini-trashcans of feed. But today he was complaining that I had taken a drawer in the entry dresser to store the different wattage heat bulbs and the Sav-A-Chick envelopes instead of putting them into the workshop shed where he has a few shelves assigned to my chicken and garden stuff. I tried to explain that getting into the locked workshop a couple times a day would be a major pain (and yes, I did have to change out bulbs twice daily last June because of wide temperature swings between day and night). Also, the bulbs are fragile and shouldn't be rattled around with the other supplies.

So, the obvious solution to me is to mount a storage cupboard on the wall of the coop inside in the brooder portion or outside in the storage area to contain small items that need to be protected but readily accessible.

I'm looking for good ideas to steal, what have you done for in/on coop storage?

Is the area inside or outside of the structure?

I am wondering if you can get a cabinet from a place like habitat for humanity or goodwill to mount in there.

I like the idea of being able to store the chicken stuff in the coop. I may go looking for a cabinet myself now. I think it would be less expensive than building from scratch.

I repurposed a couple extra nesting boxes, to store stuff in. They are blocked off by cardboard, that I can easily move, but chickens can't.

If you are wanting wall storage, what about an old kitchen cabinet or a medicine cabinet? My coop is unfinished on the inside, so the studs show. I could add lots of 2x4 "shelves" between vertical studs for storage.

How big are these?
Do you transfer feed out of bag and into these?

I use this to hold my feed in the coop shed.

I keep anything that could be compromised by heat, light, or damp in the house in a cool dark place.

I like the divider idea. I repurposed an unused Rubbermaid trash can, but so far I just dump two bags of feed into it loose and store a bit of stall refresher and oyster shells inside it in separate containers. These plastic ones have nice locking lids.

Yes, those small metal cans that hold exactly a bag of feed. I think it would be handy to have them mounted at a slight angle to make it easier to scoop the feed out.

DH doesn't want outdoor equipment in the house but I don't want to have to unlock and relock the garage door on the workshop several times a day. That door is a wrestling match. :D
