I have one Turken, his name is Ollie. We got him after we had won a big on some Bantam Turken eggs here on BYC, but none of the eggs developed, and I took my kids with me to go visit another BYC'er who wanted some of my Cochins, so we traded chicks, and my daughter saw a Turken in her brooder and just HAD to have it. I thought it was the ugliest thing I had ever seen but my daughter was in love with the baby. We thought it was a pullet, but noooo, my daughter had picked out another roo. Just my luck, lol. We ended up getting a Cuckoo Maran roo that day too. The rest of the chicks we got were all girls (thank goodness!) I have to say though, Ollie has grown on me. He and Mystery, the Cuckoo Maran boy are the first two to come running to me when I come out to the coop so that they can be the first to get some yummies. Ollie is definitely my most gentle rooster. He was also the last one in his age group to crow and he doesn't really do it that often either. My mom of all people fell in love with him. I took him to the BYC meetup in August to try to sell him along with some bantam roos, but no one wanted any of my boys, sigh. So home with me he went, and my mom said he has to stay, that he belongs here with us. So I suppose I'll have some Turken x Aracauna mixes next Spring as well as some Turken x Australorp and Turken x Sexlink crosses. Won't THOSE be interesting! I have to admit, I now find Ollie to be cute, and I think the feathers on his head remind me of Moe from the 3 Stooges, lol. Here are some pics of Ollie. The first is of when I got him when he was 8 weeks old, and the last are of him now in all his rooster glory, lol. Hope everyone else that loves Turkens finds him as handsome as we do!
As a baby:
And here he is now:
Sorry the last two are so grainy. I had to take them near dusk when they will stand still a little longer and I don't have to chase them across the yard to get a pic, and then I had to lighten them cause they were too dark! He's still standoffish, he won't let you just grab him, but he will come up for food and if you do get a hold of him, he just waits to get put down. He doesn't peck anyone or anything. His only flaw would be that he targets the bantams and deliberately steps on their heads. Brat. But I suppose we all have flaws...lol!
