The Green Dragon is in Ephrata, PA, near Lancaster. There's a small animal auction there every Friday night. I managed to get some Turken chicks (mixed with silkies, mille fleur, etc.) there a few weeks ago. I'd love to find out who sold them! I took a shot in the dark b/c I see you live near me... I can't wait until mine start laying, I'm definitely going to try to hatch some chicks. They are sooo cool!!!

Anyway, thanks! Can't wait to see more pics of the turkens, everybody! Don't knock 'em till you've had 'em! They really are cool!

Have to jump in - a couple of days ago there on the Today Show, there was a segment on the popularity of raising one's own chickens. In the final bits of it all, the chicken expert was holding and stroking a turken. The bird's neck of course was beet red. I've only ever seen photos of Turkens before this. I was amazed how red the neck was.

Here's the thing... there was NO mention of what the Turken was or that it was normal, and not a quirk, scabies victim, or 1/2 turkey Frankenstein's chicky. I was thinking the city folk (ok, people in the country can be just as dense) would think, "GAK! Look how sick that bird is, I'm staying away from chickens!"

Or maybe they'd get on line and LOOK IT UP!

I'm hoping someone is still watching this thread.

My little turken chick hatched June 26. I thought she was a pullet, but her head is starting to turn reddish and her comb is turning pink and growing. Is this normal at her age or is she going to be a roo?

I just got a Turken the other day from Atwoods as a companion to my little mystery chick I got with my Meaties. I AM IN

Now I need more! It is the sweetest chick I have ever had! When I pick it up, it's little legs just go limp and it stretches it's neck out across my hand for me to rub it! I need about 5 more!

Not sure if it is male or female, but I am thinking it is a partridge? I think I need some black ones, too!

they really are. Talk about pet chickens. Sounds like yours has you wrapped around it's little claw. LOL.

Just went and got 3 more! One black and gold definite roo, one cream/buff that is definite pullet, and one black and white that is undetermined.

I am going to keep them in a separate pen instead of letting them run wild with the others. Hopefully I'll get some babies this spring! How broody are they?

Oh and welcome to the world of Turkens. They are one of the best breeds, in my opinion, excellent layers, excellent broodies and mothers and really great conversation starters. I promise when no other bird on your place catches someones eye the Turkens will.
