We jest love our heritage turkeys...maybe jest a tad too much perhaps????![]()
Sounds like fun...so here we go...got lots of pics but will enter mostly the Sweetgrass/Ronquière this year...antiquity heritage turkeys known to exist from 1566 in Belgium!
![]()
ENTRY PICTURE ONE
Names: Black Bart on the left and his wife Louise on the right.
Breed (variety): Sweetgrass / Royal Palm BLACK patterned Ronquière jaspee.
Age: Both hatched June 2008, photo taken May 20, 2013...don't make me do the math, eh...no durn good at poultry MATH! Maybe I need to go out to the turkey barn and ask them for some ID? Fine, I asked and they say they are both over six years old now. Still no help...so out with the fingers...they are both just under 5 years old in this photo.![]()
Gender: Husband and Wife.
Picture: Shows that both male and female turkeys STRUT....so photo is of a pair of heritage turkeys "Strutting their Stuffin'!"
Names: Well golly...sure glad I don't have to supply names on the poults at this age, eh?
Breed (variety): Well let me see...there are Ronquières, Jersey Buffs, Bourbon Red, think I see a Dilute Rusty Black, a Black, a Wishard Bronze...uh, may I stop now er??![]()
Age: Day olds with three week old poults: so photo is taken on July 29 2014. One day & one week young!
Gender: Day olds & week olds, so don't hafta guess...![]()
Picture: "Sweet, sweet turkey poult pile." Some of the poults are sleeping (hard day hatching!), some just dozing, some curious why I am bothering them, and always...ALWAYS one complainer in the pile up. <<"Coop coop coop? Are you MY--gulp--parent? Please, please, say it ain't so!">>![]()
ENTRY PICTURE THREE
Name: Red.
Breed (variety): Sweetgrass / Royal Palm RED patterned Ronquière fauve.
Age: Hatched June 2008, photo taken November 2009, so he's about a year and a half old.
Gender: Male.
Picture: "Red being Half and Half." Red's head and neck are evenly coloured right down the center--one side red and one side purple...lucky Dude, he never has to commit to just one fashionable colour statement...he can be BOTH!
ENTRY PICTURE FOUR
Name: Chic, my Bowtie Gal!
Breed (variety): Sweetgrass / Royal Palm BLACK patterned Ronquière jaspee.
Age: Photograph taken on May 20, 2013, so she would be just short of two years old here.
Gender: Female.
Picture: "Bowtie Gal Chic"...I believe this to be a skin tag with feathers on it. She never suffered an accident that I know of...as a young poult she had this special adornment. It is not a beard (both boys and girl turkeys may have beards--I have a Lilac hen LoREDa that has a nice getting longer every year beard)...so I called it a "bowtie." Anyone else ever experience this...I figure Chic is a rather unique turkey girl bird for it!![]()
ENTRY PICTURE FIVE
Name: Black Bart.
Breed (variety): Sweetgrass / Royal Palm BLACK patterned Ronquière jaspee.
Age: Again, he's hatched June 2008, photo taken June 2, 2012, so my regal boy...he's four years old here in this photo.
Gender: Male.
Picture: "Bart showing off." You know...turkeys and peafowl are some of the best show offs in the poultry world, but that said, it never ever ceases to amaze me just how purdy these boys and girls may be! And they seem to know it too...nothing bashful or humble about these dem here birdles!

This is one of 12 photo collages I did up for Christmas one year...for day twelve...of the TWELVE DAYS of Christmas!![]()
Eleven of our Heritage Turkey Toms & one Turkey Hen! - Can you find her strutting her stuff right along with them boys???

You can see that I used ONE of these photos to enter this contest...so, yeh, I had WAY too many turkey photos to choose from.
So WHERE ARE YOU other turkey advocates? We need YOU posting your pride and joys so you can put my photographical entries to shame, eh?![]()
