Totally cute! I fell for the Polish this year too... don't even care if they lay well. The polish and frizzles are here to make me smile, that's about it. They've got it made. =)

I just picked these little stinkers up yesterday and I spent basically all day sitting beside them just watching. They were quiet overnight so I was worried and could hardly sleep haha First time mama problems...

Wasn't having any luck getting new chicks from tractor supply. So I got these Rhode Island Red from someone local.

That's probably a good thing. Eight of the 11 I ordered from TSC have died and it looks like another is on her way out

That is the "fun" part! I just lucked into the right store at the right time this year. This time of year it's hard to find sources that aren't sold out of the 'special' varieties -- online this time of year, a lot of things are sold out because it's the end of winter ... Congratulations on your littles! Seems like that first/day/night is always the longest. My feed store chicks collapsed into their Mama Heating Pad cave and didn't move- I think their first experience of a quiet, dark, warm space makes for some hard sleeping. I had to wake both batches up to get them to eat and drink- by the next day they were jumping around like normal babies after that first real sleep!

We put a 1/2" stick on some blocks to provide a roost. Initially, the chicks were terrified of this "new thing" in their environment. I baited them into that corner of the tub with some shreds of carrot and apple. One finally jumped up and sat on the stick for about 10 minutes. I'm sure the others will follow shortly.

Oh they will I assure you. And what a great early way to teach them to roost. Mine loved their little stick roosts!
