Gave my chicas a sand box to play in today and they're not too sure what to think yet but are getting braver. One will walk onto it and another will come push the first one in haha. Man these little chicks are entertaining. We had to put one of our dogs to sleep last night and so I've been watching these little guys most of the morning to cheer me up. They're still scared of me, like they take food out of my hands but get all twitchy when I first put it in- I'm hoping now that they've got sand to use as grit I can start winning their love through treats. They're 1 1/2 weeks old, is that too young for some small amount of veggies and/or tiny crickets?

I don't give mine anything but chick feed so they get what they can find once they are big enough to get it for themselves. Mine started trimming the greens growing in their run and catching tiny flying insects around 2 weeks and got more serious about it at 3 weeks.

Sand is iffy for grit. If the particles are too small, they'll pass right through rather than staying in the gizzard. I am lucky enough to have a crushed run gravel driveway on a hill so there are patches of finer bits where I can scoop and sprinkle it in their run. I saw this at TSC the last time I was there and it looks exactly like what I'm scooping (it's labeled for 2 weeks and up): http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...MRDWGOoC5OC6JAHPOP1L7HZ6v-vxpd4TCMaAhDP8P8HAQ

@Twiggs Are these rainbow rangers or did you get the rainbow layer pack? Two very different things...

I'm new to the breed, but they were labeled Rainbow Chickens, as dual purpose. Ordered from Hoover's.

This right here tells me you have Easter Eggers, commonly mislabeled Ameraucana or Americana. It means you can't show them and they may surprise you with their adult coloring but EEs are terrific backyard birds!

Oh, ok! That is fine with me. Thank you!

I love EEs too, and we weren't planning on showing her anyway.
