Well I’m guilty of purchasing birds from a hatchery and having them shipped to me. Thankfully I didn’t lose any, but I hear where you are coming from. People that blame the hatchery for their chicks arriving dead are not in the right. The hatcheries clearly state that once they ship chicks it is in the hands of the USPS.
My 3 Bantam hens are all rescues from the farm I worked at over the summer. I won’t go into much detail and I won't post any of the pictures I have, but the conditions were deplorable for the chickens and ducks kept on the farm. I did what I could to make the conditions better for them, but I still feel like I should have done more for them. Could I have sourced all my birds from my boss? Yes I could have, but I didn’t want debeaked birds or birds with bad habits like feather eating. My current flock are all from sources within an hours drive from me, except for the Araucanas which came from Louisiana.

I also never run heat or artificial light for my chickens. If God made it that they take a break from laying who am I to tamper with it. I have seen posts like “30°F outside should I run heat?” Like hell no you shouldn’t run heat! Also there are too many posts about coops getting burned down by fires because the owner ran a heat lamp to the coop.

I’ve had chicks shipped to me too. That’s not the point. Im just saying some dying is inevitable. The person who orders those chicks is still part of it. These people like to absolve themselves from all responsibility while they criticize others. I see so many posts about sick, dying birds it’s disgusting. Some of it isn’t avoidable because of genetics but there’s a ton that are clearly neglect, mismanagement, cruelty through laziness or however you want to spin it. Infestations of bugs, severe frostbite to the point body parts are falling off, all kinds of sickness and the big one that boggles my mind. Fly strike!! You gotta be kidding me. That’s just ridiculous. Make all the excuses you want that’s on the owner.
