I'm very new to chickens and wonder what you all might be able to tell me about this rooster:
I live in Mexico, and here they just call him a 'gallo fino'. I presume he'd be considered a gamefowl, but I'm wondering if there's anything more specific than that you could tell me. I'm interested in knowing about his breed, any way I might take a guess at his age, and what I should be expecting as far as his temperament.
He showed up on our street a few weeks ago, and had a bit of a rough time of it...no one really seems to want a rooster hanging out in the trees in front of their house, crowing first thing in the morning and poo-ing all over the side walk.
He finally ended up in my carport and I was able to herd him into a dog crate. The picture is from right after I caught him. He actually looks a little different now as he holds himself more confidently now that he's calmed down. He has an infected foot which our veterinarian has been treating. On the leg with the infected foot, his spur has slowly crumbled down to the bone, flush with the leg itself. The one on the other side is probably around an inch and a half long...I don't know if this helps to indicate his age or not.
We've been taking care of him for a bit over a week now, and he seems to be taming nicely. When we first caught him, when you opened the crate door he'd just run at you, but the vet showed me how to tip the crate up on its backside and then lower a towel over him before picking him up. We have to take him out a few times a day to iodine his foot, plus the last few days I've had to drive him to the vet's for antibiotic injections. So he's getting a lot of handling and he really seems to be quite good about it...now I can just reach into the crate and pick him up, without tipping it and without a towel. We hand feed him treats so that he has some good experiences with us, not just iodine experiences. My vet, who doesn't normally get a lot of gallos in for treatment, says that he's very gentle and tame and that as long as we continue to handle him a lot, he should stay that way. Does this seem like a reasonable assessment?
I don't know if there are any features that you need to see that aren't shown in that picture, I'd be happy to upload another one if necessary. Or if there are any details I'm leaving out here that are important. I really know nothing about chickens. We really like this one, though. Thanks in advance, for any help.
Quote: http://feathersite.com/Poultry/Games/Colombian/BRKGalloFino.html about all I can offer on those type of gamefowl. There isn't a lot of information out there on the hispanic gamefowl at all from what I have seen, unless of course you are around a expert of those type..
As long as you continue handling him, yes he should calm down more or stay as he is.. And the general rule in keeping gamefowl is the same if he is an actual game. You can find a lot of information on that by reading this thread or even looking up the American gamefowl by going to "Breeds" above and then clicking on the chicken breeds index link..

He looks a lot like a Gallo Fino, or Spanish Game, however Gallo Fino do not have white ear lobes. That would mean he is mixed with something else. Also, the rose comb indicates oriental blood in his ancestry, but as Gallo Finos often have that blood in them and orientals have red ear lobes, that doesn`t say much about what he is crossed with. If you like him, he will be a nice pet, but will be lonely for his own kind. Get him a hen..........Pop

No idea what she is, other than a pretty lady. You can rule out oriental, unless mixed, as orientals have white, or pearl eyes in the pure stuff..........Pop

She is a Rock X Cornish. These are nice looking birds. A true KFCer but they have good dispositions and good cold weather layers.
