When holding a chicken, can you use a blanket as a barrier or something, as I have allergies to chickens but would still want to socialize them.

I'm sorry - don't know the answer to the question about the blanket as a barrier- Would claritin or benadryl help ? Maybe?

Oh I missed that question, dang. Well you can try. But the thing about chickens, is they dont like to be held too tight. Most the time they enjoy just hanging out on your lap. If you have a blanket you want to lay over your lap. Then you can try that. I dont know what kind of alergic reaction you have to birds. Weither it be a respritory thing or a rashy touch and feel thing. I would suggest you be careful though. As a mean rooster could attack you. So you have to touch them at some point to protect yourself if it does. The best way to do it in my opinion is when they are roosted in the morning. Before they come off the roost, stand next to them and pet them slow and gently. Offer some treats out of your hand. They enjoy a good can of crickets . I get crickets from the walmart's fishing and sporting goods. its just a couple dollars for a huge container of crickets there and the chickens enjoy eating them. Toss one down ever so often, watch them chase it around and then they will realize where the crickets are coming from (which is you) and will start begging for them lol its a good way to get the positive attention you want from them. And its a good way to get them to trust you and relate you with good things such as yummy treats.

Just one more thing you need to know. When you do get a rooster tamed down that was once agressive. This does not mean he is tame for everyone. Most the time, 9 times out of 10 he is only tame towards you and the select few that are around him when you do this. So try to involve as many people as possible if you want it to be a family friendly bird.

When I was a kid I remember I figured this trick out with a bird my dad had. He was a gorgeous red pyle standard game and I could get that freaking bird to let me do anything to him. I painted his toe nails red, flipped him onto his back and got him to fall asleep while we sun bathed on a blanket in the yard.. and he followed me around a lot. But when anyone else came around him.. boy you better watch out. He ended up attacking my grandma one day and got her good right in the back of the leg where the knee bends. Hit a vein and she spewed blood, all cause she was just walking by him.

She swore up and down that I trained that bird to attack her so she couldnt collect the eggs near his area. lol of course I didnt. But oh well, if thats what it took to get more baby chicks I would take the blame XD

I wish I still had that video some where. My mom video taped me one time laying out in the sun with him, a deer that took up with us, and our black and tan coon dog.

Thanks for the info, the roo I am wanting to be tame isn't really aggressive but flighty. He already associates me with cracked corn and fresh water, as he is a feral/wild chicken I'm trying to catch and eventually tame. The big issue isn't the skin contact but the dander that comes off animals can mess with my sinuses, I know that if an bird doesn't want to be picked up they can get their dander all over the place and was thinking that a blanket might keep it from going everywhere, but since you mentioned feeding treats I'll try that first.

are those the same roosters? The first one really resembles a hatch (bbred coloring...). The second looks like most sweaters, or radios..

thats about as much as we could tell you on gamefowl really, and even then they could be 1/4th sweater 3/4th hatch, and the other reverse or just took after the sweater side, or they could have something completely "odd ball" in there.. You never know since a lot of the "families" look exactly alike due to having different lines crossed into them to create that line.

PS, reason why i asked if they were the same is because the first picture looks dark legged a little, and in the second you can tell hes white legged. if they're the same though i would go with him probably be sweater, or at least part.

Yes, that is the same roo in both pics, he is white legged. I was just curious about him. We have had game chickens around for years, and although i am really into the breeds of my other chickens, i never really wondered about the games, and thought it would be nice to know. Thanks for your info!!

Unless you know the blood line of your fowl, it would just be a best guess kind of thing, as many lines have similar traits, and most of the time, breeds get mixed together to increase their vigor.
