Show Off Your Games!

Quite an interesting looking bird. Are you sure she's a she? That second picture, the feathering looks rather manly. Can you get a better picture of the tail region? I think I see saddles. Either way, an pretty bird for sure. I'd never heard of the breed.

At 7 months old with no crowing, I'm thinking hen. The feathers are throwing me off as well, but I think it may just be the breed? Here's a picture that shows her tail a little better, and you're right, there are saddle feathers.

I had one who was for sure a roo, and he was quite a bit larger with a bigger comb and longer feathers. I no longer have him, but I do have pictures comparing the two when they were younger.

3-4 months old. Roo on the right.

Honestly I'm not bothered at all if she turns out to be a rooster. I bought pullets, but you know how it goes. Madagascars aren't exactly known for being good layers, and considering she's only housed with hens, it's no problem.

For someone who doesn't have access to the more unique breeds like the one above or if you can't seem to aquire from a breeder I don't really see it as a big deal although this will be my first dealings with a hatchery

Forgive my ignorance but why does everyone down hatchery stock? I was thinking of getting some dark Cornish for meat and eggs and they were going to come from a hatchery.

I've got a lot of birds from hatcheries, and a lot of birds from local breeders. It doesn't seem to make a big difference, especially if you only want meat and eggs. The problem is that you aren't often going to get show quality birds from a hatchery. The also tend to mix game birds with other breeds, so the stock isn't pure. But eh... Rex is a good pet and fun to have around, that's all that really matters to me.

Just for fun, I'm wondering what people think of this Madagascar hen. She's from a hatchery, so of course she's not amazing, but she turned out better than I had thought she would. Super tame, too.

Sorry the pictures aren't the best. It's been so nasty out that I haven't had a chance to get pictures that really show her off.
very unusual bird ........ and seems to be very healthy & well taken care of ... which is a credit to You .

I believe as long as you keep good brood fowl and watch for peddlers the quality will keep. For the most part people that are gonna just breed whatever aren't gonna be around long so neither are their birds. Even with animals like dogs and puppy mills people come and go but there will always be the ones dedicated that will preserve the standard.
sdm111 i like the way you think .............. balance is the key to life and i would say you got it

That is a stag; not a pullet.

Did your Malgache come from Ideal ? The hatchery Malgache come very true to type as they originally all came from Craig Russell. I don't know if Ideal has put anything else in them. I have a feeling they have as the females only lay around 20 eggs in the spring and 20 eggs in the fall. That would be hard for a hatchery to keep and make money on. Understand that the hatchery Malgache are not game, but they are neat to look at. They are also not as large, typically, as say mine, but that could easily be fixed with a dose of Malay.

this is one chick from my personal project, don't look it like that, here Malgaches are rare like dogs riding bicycle
