It is not blue- it is referred to as "Purple Sheen". Some say it is caused by too much maize in the diet but it is really genetic.
For cocks like yours it is no big deal but in an Exhibition bird it is a serious defect

I don't care what the Standard calls it, I think it is eye popping beautiful! When vistors see my rooster they are blown away. I have standing orders for every cockerel I produce from him. He may not win shows, but he is a head turner.

Its only a serious defect in certain breeds in others no big deal I'm sure in AGs its no biggie Australorps, it is.

iridescent black (iridescence) is the term used for such (sheen)

I cought this girl at my grandmas house in the city. ive never heard any crows in the neighborhood but maybe 3-5 blocks away... do hens travel to brood? she was setting a batch of old rotten eggs... shes settin on a mix of game, EE, and longtail eggs now...
any ideas on color?

Honestly, you have to let the light hit him just right for that purple sheen to show up like that, but when it does. Wow! A lot of people are on the list for pullets, but I got 9 males to 1 females this year. I only got three pullets out of all the chicks I hatched and I am keeping those. I have already sold off a dozen cockerels and have buyers for the next dozen when they are 3 months old. I stopped hatching egg from him in May to make room for other breeds and I have stopped all artificial incubation for the year. I am only saving that one cockerel I posted a picture of for myself. He is going to be beautiful! Here are my breeders. Made this photo for my craigslist ad.

Raccoon got 7 of 13 AG chicks 3 weeks ago, I started putting the 6 (their only 6 weeks old) that were left in a large dog crate at night but I didn't put hardware cloth over the wire door & the raccoon got 4 of the 6 last night or I should say 2 of them were gone & 2 were dead still in the cage. I'm a slow learner but the cage door is fixed now.
