I'm hoping some of you knowledgeable folks can offer me a little advise.

Several years ago I was given a "game-mix" hen, and she went down in history as my favorite hen ever. She's hatch at least 3 clutches of eggs a year, and was fiercely protective of her chicks, but not aggressive. I called her part of "the calvary" (along with one of her sons she raised!) because when a hawk would swoop down, she was running to the action to fight to protect her chicks.

I want to find some more like her. Looks don't matter to me. It's the brood hen and the attitude that she had that I want. I hope to get suggestions of what breed/color/etc I should look for, and where could I purchase??

A couple of years ago I bought 20+ "game fowl" chicks from a local breeder, and within a week they all died fr serious respiratory issues. So this makes me extremely weary of who I will purchase from, as my current flock is sickness free.

Also this past year I bought Kraienkoppes from Ideal as an experiment to see if they would be what I'm looking for. I like them, especially the lone cock who keeps all my large fowl cocks in line without being aggressive. But then hens are not broody.

Hello, sorry to hear about the 20 game chicks.. .sounds like you found a peddler and/or poor breeder.

So most gamefowl are broody and most bloodlines could work fine... Some game breeds are hardcore fighting lines and the hens will be hard to handle with other hens around. These are typically labeled as "pure breeds" or have some specific breed/bloodline names (and often times sell for way too much money like, Kelso, Pumpkin Husley, Requill, etc)

For protection/broody free range skills you cold find a game cross hen like last time or go for the more "Generic" breed of games. Generic breeds are often labeled Hatch (BBR) or Grey (Silver/Golden Duckwing) and are typically crosses of different bloodlines (which is totally fine). I find my larger American game hens tend to lay and brood better than the smaller hens. But smaller hens fare better at chasing away hawks (for obvious flight reasons).

Hello, sorry to hear about the 20 game chicks.. .sounds like you found a peddler and/or poor breeder.

Not taking up for the breeder, but it could of been the chicks had no resistance to whatever they were introduced to on their new yard. What they were being raised in, what weather conditions happened, lots of variables to take into account when bringing in new chicks. If he/she is local, the same wild birds that fly over, eat feed, and poop on his yard probably fly to the OPs too. Be sure no matter who or where you get chickens from keep them quarantined so their health as well as your original flocks can be monitored and maintained.

Wayy to much money shubin, you must remember the time and money invested in some of these birds. And all due respect you get what you pay for

I was suggesting sweet t could find some generic (maybe even jughill games) that will work fine for cheaper.

As far as the chicks yea there may numerous factors involved and i judged harshly without knowing the situation.

Luckily I treated those chicks the way I do all my chicks, in large Storage bins with clean pine shavings, starter, and fresh water. They never had access to any of my chicken areas (thank God!). In any event, tanks guys for the suggestions. Yall helped me out in narrowing down the search.

I think it's more so that people get taken by not knowing a lot about these birds then overpay to a peddler to find out later they bought something that turned out not to be what was expected. Not that good birds are overpriced
