I've had mixed luck with my orientals, trampling has been a big issue but some are great. I have a Malay hen with chicks who's kept all she hatched healthy so far with no squashes so I guess it's hen dependent?

My mutts are all furious feathered incubators though. That momma herds those "chicks" into a dog crate at night and sits on all of them still. Its very comical.

Thats funny. I heard orientals werent the best for brood, but maybe halfbreeds are really good at it. those are really old chicks.

I have asil hens that will set eggs back to back to back all year long. Have one hen that hatched a batch the day before Christmas one year... it was in the teens and below at times and she raised all 6 she hatched that winter. :)
