My American game hens make an annoying wah-wah-wah sound as moving to nest site. While on nest very quite. Following egg deposition the hen slinks away from nest then burst into flight going sometimes a hundred feet or so towards balance of flock. During take off they make a staccato cackle like sound that is also higher in pitch. Latter sound facilitates regrouping with flock and rooster tends to cover / mate with her promptly.

Brooding hens coming off nest also make cackle sound but the clucking and puffed feathers seems to inhibit rooster's interest in covering her.

My observations are based on free-range birds. Confined birds may or may not do all of same, in part because some behaviors may have need for distance or separation from flock to be exhibited.

Hey, all. This may sound really stupid (based on what we all know about the quality of most hatcheries), but I was wondering if anybody on here has had experience with Cackle Hatchery's Old English Game Large Fowl. Unlike other hatcheries, Cackle sells their gamebirds for VERY high prices (compared to others, I mean), and they are frequently sold out of this-n-that color variety. The pics they have on their website are very good-looking, but I'm not sure if those are THEIR birds and not just pics they took at national poultry shows or something of the like.
What I really want to know are the following questions:

1. Do Cackle OEG LF reach the weights they say they'll reach?
2. Do Cackle OEG LF have the classic OEG build, posture, and tail?

Even if they're not 100% pure, if these two questions are both answered "yes", than I might consider buying from Cackle. To my knowledge, there's no OEG Large Fowl breeders in my area. Chief sells American Games, I hear, and I like American Games a lot more than OEG, but I don't know how high his prices run or if he even has any for sale at the time.

Thanks for any info or suggestions!

Some folks will tell you OEG no longer exists in pure form although truth of that I do not know. The birds Cackle has will qualify as American games but their breeding program has concentrated on coloration which is likely to have degraded many of the qualities expected in games. Neighbor with some indicates at least some are game but in my opinion the birds appear a bit spindly and I have not seen many with quality feathering. Feather quality can drop pretty fast with inbreeding where feather quality is not a major concern.

Those are far from American Games, have had them and they are more "Old English" in type then American so to speak. Roosters all "manhaters" and were eventually culled because of it. Were very healthy strong fowl, just don't buy them expecting anything other then hatchery representations of previous discussed "beeds". Probably spot on about the inbreeding.
