I am considering getting a trio of one of the oriental breeds but have reservations about how I might botch their care, especially in respect to roosting and temperature needs. A neighbor has some Shamos but it appears his setup is prone to producing birds with unsound legs. He also throws a lot more quality feed at them than I do my birds.

I was told, and it makes sense to me, to keep them on the hungry side and grow them off slowly with lower protein feed. I let them free range as much as I can as I feel they have best sense as to what and how much they should eat....a lot like you do your birds. Biggest concern for me is keeping him away from other roosters as the others I have are mostly fluffy roosters with the exception of the feral. I saw where you had this issue with Eduardo. The shamo don't stop. I don't think I am going to have cold weather concerns though I will watch carefully and use plenty of hay. I have their roost (a 1x6 turned on flat side) about 30 to 32 inches off the ground...but then they routinely jump up on the porch rail and go sailing off. The width is to keep the keel from becoming dented from their weight on the edge of the narrow boards. Now, having said all this I am such a newbie but I am obsessive about reading and learning all I can to head off as much screwing up from ignorance as I can.

He's my first. New breed to me but I am enjoying them immensely. Very different from "regular" chickens.
