So a BBR and a Gold Duckwing are one in the same? Wow! I would have never have guessed that. Thanks. That silver duckwing you posted looks a lot like the Grey Stag that I bought (but never got a chance to breed). This was him.

Somebody questioned me about the purity of one of my birds today.They stated that it had to be mixed withg a meat chicken cause of his color.Really ?The color makes him a mix?Why can't people just believe you ?

Because people are people and they come with all sort of superstitions, prejudice and folk wisdom. Sometimes I look at chickens and think...they must have some game in them to be so pretty. Ha.

Actually, a Black Breasted Red bird is a red enhanced gold duckwing bird.. not one and the same..

not entirely true...

Black Breasted Red are usually red "Enhanced" wildtype birds based on wildtype "e+" which is the same "e" allele found on the red jungle fowl, BUT Black Breasted Red can be had on other "e" alleles like eb(brown or partridge) eWh(dominant wheaten) ey(recessive wheaten) and any other cross between this(eb/e+ eWh/e+ and so forth)

here is the pics to show you the difference between Black Breasted Red and Wildtype, we will be using a Dutch bantam which is the closest bird in genes to the red jungle fowl

So that helps.. some. Which is the dominent then? And is the wild type the 'gold duckwing in the middle? Sorry, my genetics where one semester and cram to pass the test. I think I will pick up a book and get the basics down..meanwhile the 'shotgun' approach to learning (like that phrase je) is confusing. But je, you can have my wheaten roo if you want....his mother was that 'buttermilk' color...I was hoping he'd be a she when he was a chick. He's a scrappy little guy too.

yes the Gold Duckwing is in the middle, its a light brown dutch bantam, the closest bird to a true wildtype(Red Jungle fowl).. the red enhanced ones like the black breasted reds are dominant over the gold duckwing

Now, while I have you here, what about pea combs? I've read they are eastern influence? It seems the dominent trait in my yard now, which I'm fine with, I rather prefer the tighter comb look and would as soon breed straight combs out.....since I don't know how to dub...all the hens are peacomb. So would that trait be more dominent?

Pea-comb is dominant, If at least one or both cock or hen are pure or "homozygous" for pea-comb (it has two copies of Pea-comb) in its genetics All of the F1 offspring should be pea-comb. If F1 pea-comb offspring are bred among themselves then the F2 generation would be about 75% pea-comb and 25% straight comb.

Of those F2 offspring, The straight combs would breed pure for straight comb, only one-third of the F2 generation pea-combs would breed true for pea-comb, the other two-thirds witll give both both pea and straight offspring in the ratio of 3 to 1..

Yea pea-combs are alot easier to dub, alot less to cut.. lol

I hope my little boy gets done with his molt soon. I'd like to get some recent pics of him on here for all to see to.

I got some stags coming but i don't even know what they look like yet they are still running around out in the woods. They are free, I figure that's a good thing right off the bat. LOL

That's why there are 1/2 walls between my game pens. If there was just wire they'd hit it from both side all day long.

We had a hen with chicks in a pen & put another hen on eggs in the pen next to it (common wire wall between them). The next morning they were trying to kill each other through the wire. Their heads were covered in blood & my good hen had hurt one of her toes,she was limping for 2 weeks. I had to put a solid wall between them, that solved the problem
