Show off your house ducks!

LOL! Omg, I never thought about it like that before! That's TOTALLY what she is!! She's gonna be super pretty, too. She's losing fuzz left and right and I can see the new feathers poking through, they're a beautiful shade of cobalt blue-grey! Squeee! <3

And again, we have a shameful lack of pictures of our growing Bean.

They're coming, don't worry! The Dear Hubby has been away all week at a video game tournament with his buddies so I have no camera. He'll be coming home tomorrow. :)

OMG busy week - so many threads to catch up on! My Khaki Campbells turned into supreme escape artists, and showed me every little spot where the snow had collapsed the perimeter fencing. After two days of fencing repair, plus obligatory secondary clips (they started flying over the fence), they ended up in the garage of shame. I loaded incubator 3 with about 3 dozen khaki eggs... Home grown will likely be more obliged to stay at home... Then a skunk hit. He got into the goose nest, wiping out all but 3 eggs. He didn't bother the aviary, so the pheasants didn't alert. It was Narcissus hissing in the dark the night after I found the nests raided that tipped us off, leading to a chase through the field and the woods. I got one shot in, but only got his hindquarters. He hasn't been back, but I've been up half the night since watching the property... Spent a day working with my daughter at the egg farm where she works, showing the twenty-somethings how to do an efficient cull. The farm has endemic lice and coccidiosis, so I had to do hardcore biosecurity heading back home (my daughter keeps full changes of clothing and shoes there)... I'm all for all natural, but a little medication is clearly indicated there... Missy was VERY angry at me for being out all day, but finally decided that she really likes her sleeping spot at the head of the bed, and forgave me for being gone. One of my Pekin ladies went lame, and her leg is inflamed. She got a warm bath and a scrub down, IM antibiotic and anti-inflammatories, and is on complete rest in the house separated from Missy. I am giving her a couple days to sort herself out, but if she does't improve she is off to the vet. I'm concerned because big pekins are prone to leg injury. I'd hate to retire her from breeding in her first season, but I am breeding for strong feet and legs, disease resistance and temperament... Hopefully she just did something dumb and will straighten out with rest. I also forgot how loud Pekins are - you can hear them outside, but it is nothing like the sound in the confined space of a ranch style house.... She is calling for her friends from the bathroom at the moment... Missy is ignoring her, since she can always hear the other birds outside, and has not seen her or been in contact with her to even know she is not the only duck in the house.
One more week before the next crop of babies to imprint hits, then there is another batch due every week for the next month. No fun incubation runs for me at the moment, this is all to fill orders and to expand my rare breed stock...
It had been nice and quiet for a while... Going to sit back and catch my breath and watch Missy cuddle with my husband...
Are all KCs good flyers? My friend has one. I wonder if I should warn him. How is your pekin lady doing now since you wrote this post? Poor thing. I love pekins. They are loud. My friend's girl is super loud. It is funny. I love how Missy cuddles with your husband. He is one lucky man.

Yippee. Bean on the forum for all of us to see and love. Blueberry feets…..

I do, too. Her blueberry feets are even blueberry feetier now! And I swear, she is getting visibly bigger each day. Two days ago she was the size of a lemon, now she's more like a mango!

Yeah, they scaled a 4 foot fence with a pop and fly move. They are little, so they can get lift... My scovies are going to need a fresh trim as soon as they molt too... My drake is too heavy, but The Twins can get lift without a clip.

Pale Girl was up on both legs for much of the day. She started to get a little wiped out after her bath (I think mom was bugging her again), but I gave her her shots and she settled down again (after complaining about the dexamethasone) Later in the afternoon she was back up on both legs having a conversation with her buddies through the wall again. She is insanely loud! They are the second loudest duck behind the call duck. Missy can't hold a candle to the noise she can make!

Missy is mad at my husband for working again. His schedule changed, and she is having none of it. It is way past her bedtime, and she is still asleep in her day spot in the hall.

Keeping an ear out for alerts from the birds, Everyone was sleeping last I looked. Of course, the whole yard was inspected by a mass of cats today, so their scent may be a little unnerving to the skunk. There were 4 half grown kittens and 2 adult queens patrolling today... The only noise so far tonight was Narcissus breaking up a Pekin love fest. He does not like the drakes chasing the hens. If the hen tries to escape, he is there in a heartbeat after the drake. He demands good behavior, and can be brutal if his rules are not followed, but he is an exceptional flock protector in return. The ladies don't get harassed under his watch... I'm exhausted, but I have 2 nests to watch tonight....

Missy just came sauntering in for bed. I guess hubby is out of the dog house...
