we now have 5 fawn and white females and 3 fawn and white drakes. I want more. At least 1 of them will go broody again this spring if not all of the girls

How did you get a Runner to go broody? By all accounts I've heard they don't make great moms...

you don't get any duck to go broody. They either have the instinct in them or they don't. My Runner Penelope was a fantastic mom. I'm hoping she or one of her offspring sit this spring. She was absolutely fantastic at raising her lil ones

The photo was taken when the Runners when through their first molt. My husband and I went to a breeder in NC and purchased three baby ducks that were a week old. They are Pencilled Indian Runners. My husband had some when he was a boy living on a farm in Ohio. He crossed them with his Pet Pekin Duck. We were surprised how upright these Indian Runners are compared to the ones my husband had back in the 60's. We also have 4 dogs, 3 Dauschunds and one Yorkie/Chi mix. They are all dogs we have rescued, one from Dauschund Rescue, one from The Humane Society, one we rescued off the streets where we live in SC (emaciated, flea ridden and about to die), and the Yorkie/Chi we found running in our neighborhood back in Ohio. We tried to find her owners but no one wanted her. Hopefully someday we will get back down to two dogs.

I know my females are HORRIBLE Moms! They kick the eggs in their cage >.> So have to be quick to retrieve the eggs before they break. They also like to do the "drop and run" everywhere! I would be outside and I would step on something and it would "POP" and then a WRETCHED smell would be on my shoes/feet

But currently I have 3 eggs in the bator for prespring trials. I know they are all Peking eggs... But 2 out of the three have a blue tint. I am thinking the fawn and white male may have something to do with the color issue lol. I candled them tonight and 2 of the eggs have definite signs of veins, the other is kinda iffy. The breaker for the room that the incubator was in go turned off so if any of them hatch they will be little miracles!

My first runners! And my first big step into owning duckies!! Who would have thought they would have multiplied so easily! Lol!!
I will post more pics when this site cooperates with me haha

Oh I know...I was just surprised that you have one that happens to be a good mother because a lot don't.

I'm thinking duck math is somewhat akin to chicken math....even when you have a set number of birds in your head and you have great self-control....you will always have a couple more than planned....I was going to get 5. I went to the feed store and got 4 chicks and 1 duckling. The 4 chicks grew up to be beautiful hens and the duckling grew up to be a Pekin drake. After re-homing the duck (which was quite upsetting) I ended up adopting another old hen from a neighbor who thought she was lonely because her buddy got killed. Still have 5 birds. BUT, I still really wanted Runners, FEMALE Runners like I originally wanted so I called the hatchery and ordered 2, because they won't ship a single chick. So now, through no fault of my own, I have 7 beautiful birds
