A black cockerel, hatched by my broodies, and a silver duckwing. The SDW was the first chick I hatched this year. Now, I can barely grab him across his back. He's built like a bowling ball.

Thank you, and you are welcome. I'm still learning too.

Jophus,
Do you know of any books that have the information as what you get with the different crosses? All of this is really interesting to me. We have an alpaca farm and are breeding them. They come in 22 different colors naturally and believe me there is little rhyme or reason to what you get when you breed. (Unless it's white to white). We bred 2 blacks and got a fawn out of it! It seems that the chickens are a little more predictable.

Your rooster looks like he has a mild case of scaly leg mites .I have been fighting that for years .It just affects some of the chickens , some of the time .I have tried several brands of medicines ,and other treatments .But the best thing I have found is to submerge both legs up to the feathers, for 3 to 5 days in a row .It works ..If not treated ,it will get much worse .,and spread to your other chickens .

I have the second, and it is better than good. I would also suggest a copy of the Bantam Standard.

Chickens are reasonably predictible as to their color genetics. You get surprised now and then, however.
