Show off your Peas!

It is mating season he is doing what peacocks do this time of year, not to worry i would say you might have fertile eggs coming, peacocks do not mate like chickens, the hen selects the male of her choosing and mating occurs pretty quickly , but unlike chickens they will not mate all threw the day with the hens so you could easily miss it if you are not right there when it occurs;)

what are you planing in your garden?

EVERYTHING lol so in that normal garden is the Sweet Corn, all types of peas and beans, 4 kinds of peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, garlic, turnips, beets, and radishes! Also Asparugus, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries. In my vine patch that I'm putting behind the barn I'm putting Cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, and zucchini

Welcome back!

Thanks all of you but I thoguht you said normally the male needs eyes on his tail to mate but he is 2 years old now and has a lot of green but I can tell they are mating when her feathers are all scratched up

Feathers scratched up? my hens ruffle and fluff their feathers after mating and you could never tell they had been mated.

You will find that some thing you are told about peafowl are not set in stone, when i first joined this group i was told peahens sis not lay eggs till they are 2 to 3 years old, i was very surprised when i found eggs from several 1 year old hens and all my first 2 year olds layed and a few hatched out chicks, i was also told that males did not get their train till they are 3 and i have many her that had/have a train well before the age of 2 , we all will experience different things with our birds that is what keeps this group going

Keep in mind the male can mate before he is fertile.

I see this with some of my hens as well, they have a distinct spot on their back where their train feathers are messed up, I think the boys may actually snap a few of the train feathers trying to get in the right position.

My one Purple hen has it and it was very obvious the past couple days. Tomorrow when I open the runs to let them out I will try to get some pictures of it.

I can tell when my hen gets bred. She makes a faint squawk right as Colbolt gets her. She's done it the past two times I've seen them breed. So I'm hoping for some eggs soon.

The three new babies all together!

Well neither hen wanted to go out this morning, so I tried to get some picks of the rumpled train from inside the barn, sorry the quality is not better. I think several of these train feathers have actually been broken off, the male is my 2 year old Purple and so he is not very "experienced". I watched him try to mate with the Midnight BS hen in with him and he did seem to have some trouble getting himself positioned correctly. So perhaps he is breaking the feathers while doing this, both of these hens have a bit of a rumpled look to their back feathers.

But he is terribly handsome!
