This is Ruby. She was sold to me as a Red Sex Link, however I really do think she is a pure Rhode Island Red. Any of the sex link experts care to take a guess?

Has anyone ever had a pullet coloured like a cockerel?

I haven't had a pullet colored like a cockerel but have had a couple of cockerels colored like a pullet. I doing a 2nd generation breeding experiment. I knew they wouldn't breed true.

I am very new to chickens so I was going off of the comb and waddles colour and size.

I thought this chick was a pullet. Still hoping she is but it seems unlikely with the colouring on her wings.

This one is very obviously a cockerel

They were bought from the same place. Craigslist specials so to speak

Thanks!

Meet Pineapple!! "She's" 3 weeks old today & my 3.5 year old son's absolute FAVORITE chicky out of our bunch of 4! We also have an Ameraucana, a Silver Laced Wyandotte & a Barred Rock!

We're hoping against what appears to be all odds that Pineapple will be a hen, but will gladly accept & love a sweetie pie of either gender... & should Pineapple NOT be sweet (aka naughty rooster) I'll need any & all advice for rehoming.

Fingers crossed!

Cmom, you're using heritage RIR/RIW for your sexlinks. Was just wondering if your egg production is the same as parent stock or better than? Have read on some sites that "homemade" sexlinks will only lay as well as parent stock. Was thinking of breeding my own RSL but if egg production is same as parents, I just as well stay with one good egg laying breed.
Thanks
Ray

im with chickkrzi, im looking to breed my own but only if the egg production is as good,
what breeds do you use to make the golden comet all the hatchery sell that lay really good eggs and a bunch of double yokers

I have some of what Ideal poultry calls golden sec links. They say on there Web site they use RIR/RIW. I ordered 8 pullets, got 6 GSL pullets 1 RIR pullet and 1 GSL roo. They are all nice looking birds, lay better than my hatchery RIR hens. It's just the egg size are somewhat smaller (55-65 grams) and egg color is paler than I like. My RIR will lay 4-5 eggs weekly at 67-75 grams. No double yorkers. All GSL are 1 yr old and RIR are 18 months old, so not much of a age deference.

well i go a one year old red sex link and she lays a bunch of eggs and a lot of double yokers,i got her from tsc last year and i just have her in a laying pen but was thinking about turning my laying pen into a breeding pen to see if i could replicate the ones that lay alot

@cmom That's what I was afraid of... so disappointed with your answer, but thank you!

I so desperately wanted this to be a great experience for my son & I guess it will be until it's not... then we will have to rehome Pineapple.
