Show Off Your Rescue Chickens!

I am not sure if he counts as a rescue chicken, he was rescued by me from me. I cross Red Rangers and this guy is a Naked Neck X Red Ranger who had the misfortune of being bred to be dinner. I have a lot of these running around but this guy was "next" on the chopping block because he recently reached 5 pounds the weight I process my meat crosses. However he is just so nice. Even though he is not even 3 months old he is breeding with the ladies but only the ones that fully submit. He never chases them and grabs them. He lets me pick him up and no other non caged chicken on my property will just let me pick them up. He never puts up a fuss when I weigh him or put him in the correct coop. he will sit on my arm and let me pet him. The more I thought about it the more I figured I should keep him around as my free range rooster. I have spared others from a table bird fate before but that was to breed them. This guy didn't mature the fastest or grow the largest from his brood. He was actually the slowest developing bird and the smallest of the males. So he isn't the ideal bird for meat breeding. He is just kept as that rooster I let run free. Usually I pen up roosters because I can't risk a rooster getting out and attacking a child in the neighborhood. The girl next door is a quadriplegic and although she is rarely outside when she does go outside she can't defend herself from an aggressive rooster. This guy I am not concerned about and I want a free ranger rooster so he is taking over that position. I would call him a rescue even though he was rescued from myself. Do I need to name him now? Very few chickens of mine get names but I might just give him a name.

This is shugah, my old english game/who knows what chick that I saved from a Cooper’s hawk. The hawk hit a feral/free range group and took off with one chick while dazing this little bird and scattering the chaperone. I couldnt say no to this cute little fuzzball, especially cause I have a matching leghorn chick that could use some wild company. If its a she i might have to change the name to Ink, ‘cause she is gonna be my incubator!! Usually the ferals we see around here in the north valley are old english game heavy in their lineage but who knows! Atleast I have a sweet sweet chicken community at my disposal to figure it out!

Here’s my poor rescue hen “Hennie” (for now) staying cool underneath a hibiscus plant.
I rehomed Hennie yesterday from a very kind-hearted couple, who had tried to rehome her from another family. She wounded her own head and her flockmates couldn’t stop pecking at it, and her second set of flockmates couldn’t help themselves either!
I offered to take her in because I only have chicks, and by the time they mature her wound should be healed. Fingers crossed everything goes well :fl

How cool that you have wild chickens where you are! The only time I’ve seen them was in Puerto Vallarta and Hawaii. The ones in Hawaii were mostly dark/black, and matched the lava rock terrain very well. Same for the wild goats there.

Here are some photos of Hennie that show her head injury better. Any thoughts?

I think this sweet rooster deserves a name :)

His name is "The Rooster". all the others are just a rooster. And The disabled girl next door has moved out so I let him run free in the yard (as long as he doesn't fly out and leave). Still a nice fellow as the young Cockerels of the same cross are mean. Those mean cockerels will be dinner soon, I just ran out of meat.
